COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State (13-13 overall, 7-10 Big Ten) women?s volleyball team, with it?s three outside hitters combining for 66 points, defeated Illinois (15-12, 7-10), 3-1 (30-27, 30-26, 23-30, 30-27) Friday night in St. John Arena in front of 1,663 fans. OSU?s Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded a match-high 29 points with Kristi Hunter (Fr., Roblin, Manitoba, Canada) and Katie Dull (Fr., Solon, Ohio) adding 18.5 each for the Buckeyes. Meyer had a match-high 23 kills adding two ace serves, two solo blocks and four assists. Hunter recorded a career-high 17 kills adding three assist blocks and Dull had 14 kills, an ace serve, a solo block and five assists. Vicki Brown, for Illinois, posted a team-high 24.5 points with Laura DeBruler adding 21. Brown had 21 kills, a solo block and five assist blocks while DeBruler collected 18 kills, two ace serves and two assist blocks.
Game one saw the score tied 19 times with 10 lead changes. Tied at 14, a Lizzie Bazzetta ace serve and kills from Johannah Bangert and Stefanie Alde gave Illinois a 17-14 lead. The Buckeyes responded with a Hunter kill, a Meyer-Kristen Dozier (So., Sandy Spring, Md.) block and a Hunter kill to tie the game at 17. Tied at 26, kills from Hunter and Meyer gave Ohio State a 28-26 lead. A Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.)-Meyer block set game point at 29-26. Illinois, with a Bangert kill, stopped the game point at 29-26. A Meyer kill ended the game at 30-27 to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .405 for the game to .267.
