Critics today are saying that Jim Tressel is one controversial pass interference call from being John Cooper. A penalty flag was the 15-inch-square patch of polyester that became Ohio State's magic carpet in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl.
In the delay in the first overtime between the ball landing in the end zone and the flag fluttering down were hatched a thousand conspiracy theories. Actually, there was a foul on the play, but it should have been ruled defensive holding since the ball was not in the air.
Ohio State won in the second overtime. It was the Buckeyes' first national championship in 34 years. Romantics said it was won by intangibles and unity, which was partly true.
