I am not sure where to place this, but for the time being Mobley's thread seems as good as any.

This is like the Miami v Miami battle where the Miami (OH) people are offended that any sports score necessitates the (OH) considering the tag line of being a university before Florida was a state.

The lifelong Minnesotans with whom I have spoken claim that Minnesota has been known as "The U" (as least up here) longer than Miami has. These guys claim to have recognized the The U as the University of Minnesota going back to at least the 50's.
