When Jantel Lavender was asked whether she had used more hook shots in a game last night than she had all season, the Ohio State freshman had more trouble with the question that she did with any of the Penn State defenders.
She stammered, paused and grinned.
"I guess you could say that," she said. "It's just that when it's there I just use it ..."
Seated to her right, Jim Foster looked over at his future and smiled.
"She'll have great answers in about a year and a half," the Ohio State coach said, "when she understands exactly what it is she's doing. Because right now she's a work in progress and she knows it."
He's right, of course, but anyone seeing her for the first time in an 89-53 win over Penn State last night would have a difficult time believing it. Lavender scored 22 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field. She had nine rebounds, one block and no turnovers, all in 28 minutes.
