I think the point is that Tressel wanted to tie academic achievement into his contract. IIRC, he wanted that to be more of a contract feature that actual football achievement. This (I believe) was to ensure that the message was sent "I'm hear to stive for excellence in all areas of a student athlete's development, not just of the field, but in the classroom and in life.
Why do profs/advisors/tutors not get extra compensation. I don't know, but I could see the potential for academic misconduct for the sole purpose of achieving a bonus being an issue. I think even the hint or possibility of impropriety needs to be eliminated in that regard.
