SARASOTA, Fla. - Jerry Gil was playing well enough this spring to get some attention.
He probably was not going to make the team, but he was showing that he could have a future in the big leagues.
Gil has two hits, including a three-run homer, in the Reds' first two games. His speed and arm are well above major-league standards. That, along with his versatility - he can play shortstop, third base and the outfield - caught Dusty Baker's attention.
