Back in my day in the '50s they played in what was called the Central Ohio League, which included Zanesville, Cambridge, Marietta, Lancaster, Coshocton, Chilicothe, perhaps others. I remember Mt. Vernon was a big non-league foe, and Jim Tyrer (later OSU and Kansas City Chiefs great) was our center and the arena at the old Newark High School was always full for those games. A fellow named Max Douglas was the coach...he was also the coach of the golf team which I played on, and went on to be the first Director of the Newark Campus of OSU beginning in 1957.

In the early '60s, the games moved to a new facility which held more people. Occasionally the Wildcats went to regional playoffs, but rarely to state level playoffs in those days. I think they played against Middletown and Jerry Lucas at some level in the late '50s, but am not sure if it was when Luke was on their team. Cats lost.

The olden days. Go Wildcats. Go Buckeyes.
Jerry Lucas played at Middletown from 1956-1959. I believe they won the state titles in 58 and in 59. I remember when he was a junior they played Cleveland East Tech who I thought was unbeatable and a creamed them.

Well those were the days. Now back to real-time.
