You have to do the stripe in proportion to the size of the piece of wood.

The 1" to 1/2" to 1/4" ratio's are correct but a stripe the exact size as that on a helmet will look too skinny on a 6ft wide table or wall or whatever.

FYI on a mini helmet I have on hand:

circumference: 12 1/2"
red stripe: 1/2"
white: 1/4"
black: 1/8"

so lets say that table is 4ft wide

red: 4"
white 1"(each)
black 1/2"(each)

anyway thats what I remember from almost painting a helmet stripe on the walls in my office. Its late and my math could be off so check me. Hope it helps.
