Jersey report (without a score!)
I'm adamant that the score means nothing in these jersey scrimmages, so let's just say the offense won, mainly because they had no turnovers and made a few big plays.
Here are a few off-the-cuff observations. I may come back with more tomorrow if stuff hits me.
-- RB Brandon Saine will be used like he should have been used last season: as a runner, outlet receiver, occasionally split out wide, on returns, etc. He's 220 pounds and can fly. Good combination. His TD run was special, turned on the jets to reach the corner, then bowled through some guys near the goal line. Nice.
-- QB Todd Boeckman is light years ahead of Antonio Henton and Joe Bauserman. If that's a surprise, shame on you. I'm not sure Henton is progressing as much as Jim Tressel would like, just reading between the lines.
-- The defense is solid but not spectacular. It looked a lot like last year, with very few, "Ooohhh" type plays. I liked the physicality of LB Tyler Moeller, but he also looked good last spring and preseason and then hardly played. Thaddeus Gibson showed some things, but he also horse-collared Henton and drew a 15-yard penalty for it.
-- Curtis Terry is a beast. He is playing linebacker and fullback, but when he's on defense, he almost always has his hand on the ground as a rush end. I'm happy for him, he was coming on before suffering that injury last preseason.
-- The three defensive backs who are in some sort of limbo all dressed, but only Donald Washington played, and he played sparingly with the third team. Chimdi Chekwa started at corner in Washington's place, and Andre Amos came in at corner for nickel, with Chekwa sliding into the slot. At safety, Aaron Gant and Nick Patterson were the second stringers.

Ohio State football: Offense wins scrimmage, no suspensions announced
Posted by Doug Lesmerises April 12, 2008 15:05PM
The offense beat the defense 55-44 in today's Ohio State jersey scrimmage, with two long touchdown passes from Todd Boeckman to Brian Hartline and a run for a score around left end by Brandon Saine, which included a few broken tackles, serving as the highlights.
The defense did not force any turnovers, which didn't sit well after practice continued to emphasize that point.
The three Ohio State defensive backs who did not take part in Friday's practice, spending their afternoon running instead, were at the scrimmage. Starting cornerback Donald Washington worked with the third-team defense, while backup safeties Jamario O'Neal and Eugene Clifford wore the yellow jerseys assigned to players who are sidelined, though typically they are reserved for injuries.
Ohio State coach Jim Tressel would not specify what the players had done or whether or not they might be suspended for games in September.
"We'll see," Tressel said. "It's a long time between now and then. Like in anything else, when things aren't exactly as they should be sometimes you lose privileges.
"Sometimes you don't do what you're supposed to do and you lose your car keys. That's as simple as I can put it."
More observations, including news on Thaddeus Gibson's emergence, Curtis Terry's fullback experience and Brandon Saine's expanding role, will follow.

Jersey Scrimmage Report
By John Porentas
The defense won the Scarlet and Gray scrimmage by a score of 55-44 and retained the right to wear the scarlet jerseys at OSU practices.
The scrimmage is considered by the OSU coaching staff to be the most important day in spring drills in determining who will have the inside track toward making the two-deep next fall.
Scoring is both conventional and unconventional. Points are awarded for touchdown, PATs and field goals as usual. However, the offense gets a point for achieving a first down as well. The defense is awarded points for a three-and-out, tackle for loss a for forcing a turnover as well as scoring touchdowns and safeties.
The scrimmage did not involve any kickoffs or punting. The offense was started in a variety of field positions including it's own 30, midfield, the 45 of the defense, and it's own two-yard line. The offense was limited to drives of 10 plays. If it did not score in 10 plays, the drive was ended.
For the most part first team players played against first team players, second team players against second team players, and so on.
