? Basics: Freshman offensive tackle
? Quick history: From Klein, Texas, where he was a Parade magazine and U.S. Army All-American, he enrolled in winter quarter so he could go through spring drills. Freshman linemen Michael Brewster and Mike Adams also enrolled early, but injuries kept them out of the spring game.
? Spring-game display: Playing right tackle for the Scarlet, he had his moments, like on Todd Boeckman's rollout, 48-yard pass to Brian Hartline in the first quarter when he picked off a would-be sacker. He also was called once for illegal procedure.
? What it means: Shugarts said in January that he wanted to challenge for the starting spot vacated by right tackle Kirk Barton. Bryant Browning seems to have the job leaving camp, but Shugarts likely earned playing time.
? Quotable: "It was good to see J.B. Shugarts back in there, because he had been in and doing well (earlier) in the spring, then got banged a little and missed a couple of days. He got back in and got some good experience, and I'm sure (offensive coordinator Jim) Bollman will feel like he'll be battling in that two deep." -- coach Jim Tressel
