CINCINNATI -- Jerome Simpson did not expect to be drafted until late in the second round, if at all on the first day. He went to dinner with his family last night and was driving home, oblivious to the pomp and circumstance on ESPN, when Bengals coach Marvin Lewis called to say he was the team's second pick, No. 46 overall.
"We pulled over on the highway, and we were jumping up and down crying," Simpson said.
A receiver, high jumper and long jumper at Coastal Carolina, Simpson was projected as a third-round pick at the earliest. The Bengals grabbed him in the middle of the second round, over productive receivers from bigger schools, including Malcolm Kelly of Oklahoma, Limas Sweed of Texas, DeSean Jackson of California and Mario Manningham of Michigan.
