OTTAWA -- Center Zac Dalpe was drafted into the NHL yesterday, immediately finding himself in a difficult situation.
Dalpe, a center who has signed to play at Ohio State this fall, was drafted in the second round (No. 45) by the Carolina Hurricanes, and therein lies the potential problem.

Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos also owns the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League, the junior club that owns Dalpe's rights.

There is much speculation that Karmanos, through the Hurricanes, will lean hard on Dalpe to break his commitment to Ohio State and join the junior ranks.

Dalpe, who sat at the draft yesterday with OSU assistant coach Casey Jones, was asked if Ohio State coach John Markell should be nervous.
"He might be a little bit," Dalpe said. "But I gave coach Markell my word.
"I think I want to go to school. There's a lot of speculation, but I'm a pretty loyal guy."

Plymouth coach Greg Stefan hinted that a sales job was forthcoming.
"We think it's in Zac's best interest to play with us," he said. "But I respect his family.
