John McCain did not win the Congressional Medal of Honor. He earned many military honors, including the Silver and Bronze Stars and Distinguished Flying Cross. The CMH is the highest honor bestowed on soldiers. A few years ago, I read an article in Life or Time recounting the stories of several recipients, they were truly amazing. I remember one where a soldier single handedly fought off an entire platoon of Nazis after the rest of his unit had been killed or wounded. It is often awarded posthumously.
