Objectively, from a purely politilcal standpoint, it is hard to fight the notion that the Dem primary has escalated precisely on cue to this point...

I don't think there's any question that the speeches have been good for what they needed to be. But, with the exception of Reagan, there really hasn't been too many times that the Dems didn't give better speeches than the Repubs did the past 50 years. Nixon was droll and boring, The Bushes couldn't deliver a speech to save ther lives...and they all managed wins, many times 2 of them. Speeches at conventions are lovely, and if they accomplish actually getting people out to vote, then they have been successful. However, there is a lot of time for the average Joe to forget these speeches before November...it's what happens between now and then that counts. The same, of course, goes for the Repubs.
The interesting thing will be to see how the Repubs respond...Clinton won in 1992 in part because that (Repub) was arguably the biggest disaster of a convention since the 1968 Democratic nightmare. One thing this week has done is put quite a bit of pressure on the Republicans...we'll see what happens.
