The pick is genius for the following reasons:

1. It was a genuine surprise, watering down some of the buzz from Obama's terrific speech last night.

2. The Hillary factor. Obama missed his chance to pick an historic running mate, and McCain stepped in.

3. Palin's beauty, like it or not, will be an asset. Unlike a Kay Bailey Hutchinson, she does not give off that appearance of an old-style female Republican hell-bent on traditional female roles in society. She looks the part of an independant woman.

4. She gives credibility to McCain's position to drill in ANWAR. It's her state. Certainly, she's qualified to speak on the issue.

It's also an extremely risky choice for the following reasons:

1. No one has any idea how well she will carry herself on the national stage. We'll find out next week.

2. She's young and extremely inexperienced, which will hurt McCain's ability to continue to attack Obama on the same for the same reasons.

3. As an extension of #2, McCain's age must cause concern that Palin, with no experience in foreign relations, could become President at the beat of the heart.

4. She'll be in trouble when she debates Biden, especially on national security issues.

5. She will be seen, by some, as a token pick, simply a pawn to attract upset Hillary voters.
