The timing was definitely aimed at deflating the Obama speech bump, but as I mentioned in McCain's thread, the VP pick is mostly about image for the campaign (hello Mr. Experience Joe Biden), and this one does a lot for the McCain campaign:
-out-of-nowhere woman outsider pick gets the "wow" media factor and lots of pub;
-attractive woman (former Miss Alaska runner-up) helps offset really-old white guy McCain image, and of course appeals to Hillary/feminist voters;
-Washington outsider with executive experience (and very high approval ratings) and ethics background;
-NRA member, hunting and fishing enthusiast;
-Eskimo husband (high-school sweetheart and snowmobile champ) will be a media darling, son will be going to Iraq this month;
-fiscal conservative and pro-life good for the right;
-reasonable positions on the gay marriage issue that probably won't offend either side;
-Alaska background brings a personal touch to the drilling discussion...
There are a lot of conservative concerns and interest groups (and fence-sitters, especially those previously inclined toward Hillary) who will find something to like about this pick.
