Well, Virginia Tech just isn't that good either.
I voted in this poll and my ballot had Utah ahead of East Carolina.
The problem when evaluating the two teams against one another is that one took advantage of a team learning two different, new offenses under a new coach, while the other took advantage of a team QB'd by Sean Glennon. Push.
I think Utah had the tougher game overall, was more dominant, and allowed the score to be closer than it should have been with the punt block and the fumble that let Michigan back into the game in the fourth. Those two plays turned a 25-10 game into a 25-23 game in 70 seconds. That also doesn't account for the fumbled punt return in the first quarter that set up Michigan on their first TD.
Starting field position for all three of Michigan's TD scoring drives: Utah 26, Utah 31, and Utah 33.
The Utes, I think, will prove to have a better defense, and they have a kicker in Sakoda, who hit four FGs, including one from 53.
Of course, if East Carolina goes on to upset West Virginia while Utah looks like crap again perennial MWC doormat UNLV this weekend, I'll change my vote in Week 2 (and delete this post).
