From George Blanda to Tim Couch, Jared Lorenzen and Andre Woodson, Kentucky has turned out some memorable quarterbacks.

Playing in their shadows isn't easy.

That's what Mike Hartline is doing, and the GlenOak High School graduate is handling his role as a first-year starter for the Wildcats relatively well.

Hartline has Kentucky off to a 4-1 start, and with the help of one of the country's best defenses, nearly upset No. 2 Alabama last week.

Hartline and the Wildcats host South Carolina on Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium. He knows fans have great expectations for him.

"I think times are changing here," Hartline, a sophomore, said after practice Thursday. "Even back when Couch was here, it was all about basketball. Fans would come out to the games and hope we won. They didn't expect us to go to a bowl game and for a quarterback to go out there and put up the type of numbers we have.

"It's always been about basketball, and while basketball is still important and a big-time attribute to the university, football is growing."

So are the expectations.

"There's pressure, but at the same time our coaches have put it in perspective as to what they want me to do to be the starter. I'm going to be here three more years. It's a marathon, not a sprint. ... They want me to take care of the football, keep my emotions in check, and realize I have 10 other guys out there and I have to get the ball to the athletes."
