I believe that most American cars cannot be sold overseas because of fuel efficiency and emissions standards. Most European, and some Asain, countries signed an agreement on those standards, which are significantly tighter than the US. I had never heard of the unions being behind it. I have actually been looking for a good article on that subject lately, but with the glut of bailout news, the searches are hard to refine. If I find anything, I'll post it.
