I didn't see the press conference, but BB73's comments as well as the comments from SC fans that Jwins quoted say enough. With that being said, it seems pretty uncharacteristic from what we usually see from Carroll. At USC, of all places, you'd think he'd have the "next in line, step up" mentality in this situation as he has in years past.
What I'm trying to figure out is how much, or what percentage of his statements derive from:
1. His actual concern for the well-being of Mark Sanchez's future
2. His concern that a new starting QB next season makes them more likely to drop an extra game or two, knocking them out of the title hunt yet another year (like BB73 said)
3. The fact that the last "All-Everything", can't-miss QB prospect out of USC (one of the first QB recruits on his watch, if I'm not mistaken) was handed a clipboard in favor of gray-bearded Kurt Warner, and another USC QB not living up to expectations in the NFL would somehow tarnish the image of what he has going on at USC.
Just thinking out loud here. Well not out loud, but you know what I mean. It just seems for him to react this way, there has to be an underlying reason. I'm not familiar enough with Carroll to know what the most likely reason would be. Like I said, he usually just throws the next 5* kid in there and they don't really see much of a drop off. I'm surprised to see that from him today.
