OSU women's basketball: Another national honor for Lavender
Center makes State Farm All-America team
Sunday, April 5, 2009 3:52 AM
By Jim Massie
Ohio State sophomore center Jantel Lavender was named to the State Farm Coaches' All-America team yesterday, her third such honor of the postseason.
The Big Ten player of the year in each of her first two seasons with the Buckeyes, Lavender previously was voted onto the United States Basketball Writers Association All-America first team and the Associated Press All-America second team.
Lavender was the only Division I player to rank in the top 20 nationally in scoring (20.8), rebounding (10.7) and field-goal percentage (54.1). She collected 24 double-doubles while leading the Buckeyes (29-6) to a fifth consecutive Big Ten regular-season championship and to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.
Also joining Lavender on the team were Maya Moore, Renee Montgomery and Tina Charles of Connecticut; Kristi Toliver and Marissa Coleman of Maryland; Jayne Appel of Stanford; Courtney Paris of Oklahoma; Angel McCoughtry of Louisville; and DeWanna Bonner of Auburn.
Moore also was the runaway winner as the Associated Press player of the year, and her coach, Geno Auriemma, was named coach of the year for the sixth time.
