I don't think FIFA will admit to the call coming from off the field, but it looked to me that it might have.
The US got a handball in the El Salvadore Honduras CONCACAF WC Qualifier about a week ago. The center referee did not originally award it, but you could tell he talked into his headset and confirmed the handball with the linesman. Now whether those mics are hooked up to other outside sources , I am unsure of, and we'll likely never know.

I'm excited for the US today. No they may not perform well (at all), but I'm glad they got into this very tough competition as a good warm-up for the 2010 WC. It will be a good test to go against 3 top teams in the world (and maybe even advance to play some more...). I'll be wearing my US jersey and cheering hard. I think our National Team often plays to the level of the competition (both good and bad), so while they may get "embarrassed", it also would not surprise me to see them get some results. Two out of the three teams in the group are as top class as it gets and Egypt is a very very good squad as well, but the US knows how to play physical, smart, hustle, and cause problems for opponents.

I hope they come out fired up and not scared, but either way it should be a learning experience for next year. USA!
