Indianapolis Pike's Marquis Teague 'so good it's ridiculous'
By Jody Demling • jdemling@courier-journal.com • July 9, 2009

CLEVELAND — Indianapolis Pike High School junior-to-be Marquis Teague looked like a normal point guard working the basketball down the court in the King City Classic at Cleveland State University on Wednesday afternoon.

But then Teague — one of the top prospects in the country — did his thing. He faked a jab-step right, crossed over and went left, darted past three defenders, cut back to the right side of the lane and dished a nifty underhanded pass to teammate Jared Sullinger for a dunk.

There was a lot of chatter and movement in the stands where most of the top-level NCAA DivisionI college coaches were sitting — and smiling. Even NBA superstar LeBron James, sitting close to the court, looked amazed.
"That was an NBA All-Star type move," said one college coach whose team finished in the top 20 last season.
Teague made play after eye-catching play during the two-day event for some of the nation's best high school basketball players. And every time he made one, there was Indiana coach Tom Crean watching from the front row and Louisville coach Rick Pitino not far behind in a visible position.

"He's so good it's ridiculous," said Sullinger, who is considered one of the standouts in the Class of 2010 and has committed to Ohio State.

The 6-foot-2, 165-pound Teague has moved up to No.2 in the Rivals.com national rankings for the Class of 2011 and is rated No.6 by Scout.com.
He was one of the most impressive players at the LeBron James Skills Academy and the King City event, and his recruitment is a war among Louisville, Indiana, Wake Forest, Purdue and Ohio State.

"He's a Chris Paul-type player," recruiting analyst Ron Briscoe said. "He is really, really, really good.

Pike's Teague keeps No. 2 ranking in perspective
ranked No. 2 in nation in 2011 class by one service, nears college decision
By Kyle Neddenriep

Shawn Teague just shakes his head when asked about his son's recent designation by rivals.com as the No. 2 basketball prospect in the country for the 2011 class.
Marquis Teague, the
standout Pike High School guard, is one of the most highly-sought recruits in the country.

"I don't like to see that," Shawn Teague said of the ranking. "But Marquis does a good job handling it. He knows that those rankings don't mean a thing once you get on the court."

Marquis -- whose older brother Jeff was selected with the No. 19 pick by Atlanta in the first round of the NBA draft last month -- is closing in on his college decision. His father said it's likely to happen next month, after the end of the coaches' evaluation period and before the beginning of school.
The Teagues had planned to announce a decision in June, but Shawn said he wanted to make sure the family could sit down and discuss it.

"That's where we are right now," Shawn Teague said. "I know it's been pushed back a couple times, but I felt like it needed to be. Committing early was something that was tough for me, especially knowing the coaches could be somewhere else by the time he would get there."

Kentucky, with new coach John Calipari, has entered the mix for Teague, along with Indiana, Louisville, Ohio State, Purdue and Wake Forest.
"Kentucky has definitely offered," Shawn Teague said.

Marquis played this week at the King City Classic in Cleveland, which followed the LeBron James Skills Academy. He will rejoin his Spiece Indy Heat team this weekend.

"I think Marquis is about ready to make a decision," Shawn Teague said. "Honestly, there aren't a lot of negatives with this group of schools."
