Status of Illini's Brent is in limbo
07/28/2009
CHICAGO ? Illinois defensive tackle Josh Brent has served time in jail for a DUI case, but coach Ron Zook said he has yet to determine if the potential starter will face further penalties.
Zook said he will meet with athletics director Ron Guenther soon to discuss whether Brent has "paid his price."
"I see a difference in him in a positive way,'' Zook said. "He's very remorseful and understands he made a serious mistake. He paid dearly for it. He's always been a good kid, for the most part good in school and never a character issue.''
Brent was sentenced to 60 days but was released sooner, having received credit for time served.
Although Zook didn't draw a connection to the Brent incident, he said he instituted what he called "character teams'' in March to hold players accountable for their actions among peers.
