They have a bunch of talent up there, far too much to be looking as clueless as they do on defense.

I agree 100% with you. But it is very hard to get inside of a 17 year old's mind. It is very unfortunate, but most people in Cincinnati feel there is a certain level of arrogance towards Cincinnati from Columbus and North East Ohio. That is why there are so many scUM fans down here. Most kids don't grow up dreaming of wearing the scarlet and gray down here.
I played at Colerain in the mid to late 80's. I remember going on that trip to scUM...and I will not lie...I was highly impressed. I got to meet Bo, practice in the big house and take a tour of the campus. I had some talent (I was a sophomore) and the scUM coaches had me at hello.

Thank goodness injuries and dunkin dounuts kept me away.

That is what Cobrani and Connor are going through. Both went to scUM camp as freshmen and their first impressions of the big time were of TSUN...and it was at a time when OSU really did not have a presence in Cincinnati. JT is trying to change that and build those bridges...and I think (and Hope) that Connor Smith will be the key recruit to help that cause.
