2004 Player ratings from Scout.com

I thought it would be handy to have a thread with everybody and their ratings from Insiders, (now Scout), as of NLOID in 2004.

http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=145&p=9&c=8&yr=2004

The number after the position is Scout's ranking of the player in that position nationally. The date at the end is when the player committed.

It is neat looking back at some of these old threads around recruits and seeing how they turned out. My take on our class from that year.

S 17 Devon Lyons
I really thought he was a HUGE get for us. Hasn't seemed to find a position here.

LB NR Curtis Terry
Thouhgt he was a HUGE reach..I am wrong once again. The kid is getting better and better and has contributed a lot even early.

CB 62 Dennis Kennedy
I was really excited about this kid. Seemed to bleed Scarlet and Grey. I wasn't sure if he would play but liked him. Making some noise up Akron.

WR 24 Albert Dukes
I thought the comparisons of Holmes was dead on. Again, another reason why I am not coaching to make a living. Done nothing to date.
DT 44 Nader Abdallah
Didn't know a lot about him. Still don't...

OL 7 Kyle Mitchum
I was suprised by his 4 star rating aftr seeing him play. Thought he would be a starter for a year or two and it looks like that might be the case.

S 41 Nick Patterson
I didn't know a lot about him, but he was a quality kid (grades, reports, etc) and had great measurables. Making an impact this year

DE 39 Vernon Gholston
Vey suprised he was only a 3 star. The words RAW was thrown out with him, but his measurables were awsome. He is becoming a hell of a football player

DE 59 Alex Barrow
I was really suprised he got an offer after watching him play. I think he has moved down to DT

CB 1 Ted Ginn
I had an opportunity to talk to Bob Palko after the Army AA game and he guaranteed me that Ted Ginn would never see the field as a DB. I thought he was nuts. He also said he had the 2nd most potential to be star in college behind Dwayne Jarrett.

P NR A.J. Trapasso
Saw him in HS and really like the idea of having athletes as kickers, ala Andy Groom, etc.

TE 2 Rory Nicol
Extremely excited when we landed him and I still think his best has yet to come. With the weapons we have at WR it is hard to say if he has been a little bit of a bust or not.

LB NR Brandon Smith
I thought he would be a diamond in rough and be a 2 year starter at lb.

RB NR Dionte Johnson
The offer came out of nowhere IMO and I knew nothing other then his legacy name. BTW he seemed to fall off the face of the earth after a pretty good Freshman year.

LB 11 Marcus Freeman
Outside of Ted Ginn I thought he was the next big thing at OSU. Solid contributor

CB 14 Brandon Underwood
Another Underwood.. There was some dude on Bucknuts at the time raving about these two. Rev something I think. I drank the Kool-Aid. At least he is back on the team

QB 55 Joe Bauserman
Knew he would play baseball

RB 58 Erik Haw
Another recruit I was excited about, but I am always cautious about City League school players because sometimes stats are inflated with bad comp, or under because of bad surronding talent.

OL 94 Jon Skinner
Another steal IMO from PA. Expected a Red-Shirt and to be solid contributor for two years.

OL 48 Steve Rehring
I was REALLY worried about him. I thought Larry Kinard. The kid has worked hard and a solid addition.

S 7 Sirjo Welch
His Stock was on the rise during camps and I had big expectations. It looked as though he was going to be a great player here at OSU, but the promising future did not come to fruitation.

TE 4 Chad Hoobler
I thought LB all the way and at least I got that right. I really thought he was a Hawk, Carp type player. Too bad it did not work out here for him

RB 31 Antonio Pittman
He commited so early that he was lind of forgot about. Needless to say he turned out ok.
OL 17 Ben Person
Another OL that had a lot of pub, but I was never sold on. So far he has not made an impact at OSU

CB 32 Shaun Lane
Another player that I thought was a reach and might contribute only on special teams. So far he has sevral position changes and has not made an impact.

K NR Aaron Pettrey
Umm he was a kicker, I trsut JT in this area. He didn't need to know my expert opinion with him :-)

Dionte is a strict fullback in an offense that doesn't use it much. He's been in to block for Chris Wells a lot this year with White sliding down to block at TE. Alas, White's ability to block from there and the emergence of Jake Ballard has really cut into the playing time of Brandon Smith.

This class is interesting because (IMO) after just 2.5 years, you can delineate the stars (or long-term starters) from role players with not a lot of in-between.

Pettrey, Trapasso, Nicol, Ginn, Pittman, Rehring, Gholston, Freeman, and Terry are all vital cogs.

Bauserman, Kennedy, Haw, Hoobler, Welch are all gone.

Patterson, Underwood, and Lane have been passed by the stellar 2005 DB class, ditto for Lyons and Dukes at WR. Brandon Smith and Johnson fulfill their niche roles well. The three OL (Skinner, Rehring, Person) will battle for Downing's spot next year, but none can play C. Abdallah seems to be kinda flaky and has family and injury problems, Barrow seems to be a bit of a 'tweener who is at least getting on the field.

I agree, I thought this was going to soften the blow of losing Davis, but he has fought injuries. Maybe he will make a contribution down the road, but right now he has struggled.
