A look back at Ohio's 2004 football class

With such a heavy focus on the upcoming football season and the summer camp circuit, we wanted to take a step back and examine Ohio's 2004 recruiting class -- or, more specifically, how the top players in the state (as deemed by Rivals.com) fared.

The players will be listed with the position they were primarily recruited to play.

Associated Press
Ted Ginn Jr. became one of the most dynamic forces in the country as a freshman and should be squarely in the Heisman mix as a sophomore.

1.DB Ted Ginn Jr.
Cleveland Glenville
Signed with Ohio State

2004: All he did was put together one of the most electrifying seasons (or half-seasons, really) in college football history. He set a school record and tied a Big Ten record with four punt return touchdowns and led the nation in that category (25.7). He caught 25 passes for 359 yards and ran for an additional 113 yards. Will be a major player in the 2005 Heisman race and could play some defense.

2. WR Fred Davis
Toledo Rogers
Signed with USC

2004: After starring at Rogers, Davis had a disappointing freshman campaign, catching just 4 passes for 30 yards as a backup tight end.

3. LB Marcus Freeman
Huber Heights Wayne
Signed with Ohio State

2004: Primarily a special teams player, Freeman made 4 tackles.

4. OL Brandon Braxton
Youngstown Ursuline
Signed with Oklahoma

2004: Qualified late and did not enroll. Came in for spring practice 2005 with freshman eligibility.

5. DE Michael Massey
Cleveland St. Ignatius
Signed with Michigan

2004: Redshirted.

6. RB Tony Pittman
Akron Buchtel
Signed with Ohio State

2004: Gave the Buckeyes ground game a bit of a spark in midseason, picking up 381 rushing yards and scoring one touchdown. Averaged 5.3 yards per tote in a mostly back-up role.

7. TE Chad Hoobler
Carrollton
Signed with Ohio State

2004: Redshirted.

8. OL Ben Person
Xenia
Signed with Ohio State

2004: Redshirted

9. WR Miles Williams
Austintown Fitch
Signed with Michigan State

2004: Played in six games and made 1 tackle before being dismissed from the squad late in the season.

10. DB Shaun Lane
Hubbard
Signed with Ohio State

2004: Redshirted.

11. DB Sirjo Welch
Columbus Beechcroft

Signed with Ohio State

2004: Redshirted.

14. RB Erik Haw
Columbus Independence
Signed with Ohio State

15. OL Steve Rehring
West Chester Lakota West

2004: Started once and played in six games, all at left tackle.

16. QB Brian Hoyer
Cleveland St. Ignatius

I thought Hoobler played special teams and saw some mopup duty last year on defense.

gobucks19 could go either way
Interesting to note that Dionte Johnson was not on that list. I would say he has made quite a name for himself last year and put himself in a very good position to see significant playing time this year if not starting. And some people thought his offer was purely "legacy" based.

Anyone else that wasnt on that list that saw significant time?

On a side note, anyone care to see how many people from OH that Michigan State took? 6.

19... Those were the top 50 seinors last year. Dionte wasn't in the top 50 that's why he's not on that list.

Curtis Terry didn't see significant time but he did play on special teams a good deal and looks to have a pretty bright future. Quite an accomplishment for a guy who many people didn't think deserved a late offer. If only Tressel knew how to recruit and stopped going after unranked players like Terry, Kirk Barton, etc.
