There hasn't been much discussion on the board regarding our new walk-on's. If anybody knows of any maybe we can list them here in this thread?

Drew Parry

Drew Parry isn’t lacking for confidence this track season.

The Maumee senior has gone into every track meet this spring expecting to outdo everyone in the shot put.

He won the shot competition at every dual meet the Panthers were involved in during the regular season. He easily won the Northern Lakes League championship before taking first place at the district meet.

Making his second straight trip to the Division I regional track meet, Parry hopes to continue with his winning habits today at Amherst Steele.

"This is the first meet that I know I’m probably not going to win it, so I hope that the extra boost will help me,’’ Parry said. "I basically knew that I could have a bad day [from previous meets] and still could win.’’

Parry, a 6-2, 295-pounder, qualified for the regional with a personal-best throw of 51-41/2 to place first at the district a week ago at St. Francis de Sales. He was the only competitor at the meet to mark with a throw measuring 50 feet or better. However, he enters regionals not owning the best qualifying effort among the field.

Nevertheless, Parry has prepared himself to make the most out of his last chance to win a regional title while also attempting to qualify for the state meet. The top four finishers in each event automatically qualify for the state meet scheduled for next Friday and Saturday at Ohio State.

"I hope to add a couple of feet on my best throw and whatever happens, happens,’’ Parry said. "Anything can happen in the shot put.’’

Anything basically did happen for Parry a year ago. Unfortunately, it resulted in him learning a hard lesson.

It was at the regional last year where Parry’s junior season for track came to an end. Inclement weather made conditions for track and field less than ideal. Furthermore, heavy rainfall delayed the meet for approximately an hour.

The delay led Parry and a few friends away from the competition and into a nearby store to pass the time. However, by the time he returned to the track there was only enough time for him to get in two warm-up throws before the competition commenced. As a result, Parry struggled and failed to advance to state.

"No way that’ll happen again,’’ he said. "I think we’ll be prepared this time.’’

A perennial All-Northern Lakes League offensive lineman, Parry intends to walk on at Ohio State in the fall. While some mid-major colleges expressed interest in him, Parry said college football recruits expressed concern about him being only 6-2.

"Track is a workout for football,’’ Parry said. "It’s something to keep me competing.’’

The crowd at kicker for Ohio State will reportedly get even more crowded in the fall as a kicker/punter from suburban Columbus is set to walk on to the team.

Jonathan Skeete was a Division I first-team, all-Ohio kicker for Gahanna (Ohio) Lincoln in his first season of football last year, but did not receive much attention during the recruiting season.

The 5-10, 170-pound Skeete reportedly earned an academic scholarship to Northwestern and was to have tried to walk on with the Wildcats. But BuckeyeSports.com has learned that he will now try to join the Buckeyes when they open fall camp in August.

Skeete had 13 field goals in 2003 and routinely boomed kickoffs out of the back of the end zone. He also averaged 38 yards per punt.

Mike Nugent returns to OSU for his senior season this year in charge of the placekicking duties. Starting in 2005, however, the kicker position will be wide open.

The punting chores for '04 are already wide open with a spring battle between A.J. Trapasso, Kyle Turano and Josh Huston set to renew in fall camp.

Good to read about Drew Perry. This will be Maumee's 3rd buckeye in the last decade. Matt LaVarr (DE/LB) had an average career, Mike Jacobs (walk on Center) started one game, and now Drew.

There is a LB walkon that supposable has been a intermerual stud for 3 years. He will only have 2 years to play but apparently has great speed and could be a special teams difference maker.

And don't forget John Kerr is a walk-on and may very well start at MLB in a couple years.

Don't we have a good FB walk-on "Fitz..."

Even though the article does not mention any change to Trapasso's status, I still wonder if this move is connected. If it isn't that would make 3 schollies for kickers in a two year period (Trapasso, Skeete and Pettrey '05).

The article also mentions that John Barker from Westwood, Ma will be join J.D Bergman as walk-on kickers this Fall. But it does sound like Huston will be the Starter.

Well we certainly have some competition at the Kicker positions.

By the way Skeete will be kicking at the North/South game Saturday night.

Barker to walk-on

The Hawks will send John Barker to the mound. Barker, a senior who will try to walk on as a placekicker at Ohio State next year, threw 164 pitches last Saturday in Xaverian's win over BC High. He is also the leadoff hitter and is batting .476 in the tournament.

Despite his talents on the mound, Barker, an Avon resident originally from Naples, Fla., has football on his mind. The No. 22-ranked high school kicking specialist (including punters and kickers) in the country according to Rivals.com, Barker will forget about baseball and walk on at Ohio State University in the fall.

"It was a tossup, either baseball or football," said Barker, who was the South placekicker in Friday night's Shriners All-Star football game. "Then I visited Ohio State and watched the spring game there and I pretty much fell in love."

Looks like the scholarship was Northwestern's, and that OSU has yet to offer him one:

Even if Trapasso might be losing his schollie I have trouble believing OSU is offering a full ride to Skeete. JT has been so hesitant to give schollies to kickers (re: Graessle from two years ago) why pull one out for a kid who - so far as I can find - wasn't hotly pursued by anyone and was headed to NU an an academic schollie? And we certainly aren't rolling in ships.

In the article LJB linked Skeete mentioned that the Ohio State coaches told him Huston has won the punting job. I watched Huston at practice last summer and that's not good news.

Let me start by saying I certainly hope you're right about Huston and I for one hope he makes a believer out of me and continues the tradition his predecessors have set. BJ's biggest problem was consistency and getting the ball off quickly. I watched Huston kick the ball time after time and he just doesn't have the leg Groom and Sander do(few do, I know). His punts were not particularly long and didn't have much in the way of hang time.
