Remember a couple of things:

1. Talent evaluation is not a perfect science. After all, doesn't Nick Goings have more yards rushing in the NFL than he did at OSU? Just because a guy isn't #1 on another school's depth chart doesn't mean he's necessarily worse than the others.

2. LSU (& most of the rest of the SEC) plays a very different style of football than Ohio State. This guy may or may not be a better fit for Ohio State.

If Edwards would be a good fit here, we really could use some depth at RB. We could also use a good special teams player, quite frankly--kick coverage was an unpleasant adventure at times last year. However, if he really does have major off-the-field problems and/or attitude issues...we should probably pass.

I'll count on the coaching staff to make that call...but don't dismiss a talented athlete too quickly.

As Oh8ch said above, Schlegel is hardly a "hand-me-down" like Edwards is. Schlegel was first-team all-Mountain West as a sophomore. And I've never heard anything about him busting a pellet in someone's ass either.

If the kid does have a history of off-the-field problems, my guess is that Tressel goes nowhere near him.

While the media enjoys putting a microscope on our player arrests, they don't like to give equal treatment to Tressel's & Geiger's firm way of handling those players. OSU hasn't given the repeat or serious offenders a bunch of more chances, unlike the other major programs under the microscope (but hey, the cops were obviously racist bastards in arresting Rolle).

I also agree that the Schlegel transfer isn't relevant--he was starting, and making lots and lots of tackles.

I would be glad to take this kid. first of all the kid did get some pt as a true freshman and he did avg 4.1 yds a carry. that might not be to bad considering he probably played towards the end of the games when they were running out the clock and you knew they were going to run the ball. and maybe another reason is because he's not an ass kisser. believe it or not some coachs do play favorites, and when he noticed that he was not on the coachs buddy list he decided it was time for a change of scenery.

and as for the hand me down comments. maybe just maybe he is better than what we have now. atleast he has been a little battle tested.

I say, if the kid can help the program, get him. I don't care who's "hand me down" he is, or what some posters on some LSU site had to say about him.


All that said, I don't know much about him. So, at that, I'll just follow along.

Coach says Edwards to transfer from LSU

Fifth-string tailback Barrington Edwards, one of LSU's top recruits in 2003, received his release last week from coach Nick Saban and hopes to transfer to a school closer to home, his high school coach said Saturday.
Scott Chadwick, who coached Edwards and Bowie High School to the Maryland Class 4A state championship in 2001, said the parting of ways between Edwards and LSU appears to be a mutual decision.

Edwards, who would have been a sophomore this season, did not return telephone calls to his family's home in Bowie, about 10 miles northeast of Washington, D.C.

Saban, with his family at his summer retreat in Georgia, could not be reached for comment.

LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette would neither confirm nor deny the news.

"I don't have any information," Bonnette said.

Chadwick, who called Edwards the best player he's coached in a 10-year career, said Edwards' decision to leave LSU was in part because of a lack of foreseeable playing time and in part because of disciplinary problems.

"He hasn't made some of the greatest decisions in the world while he was down there," Chadwick said. "The coaches there at LSU tried to be patient with him from a discipline standpoint.

"Also, he sees a pretty good logjam at tailback."

LSU returns a senior, a junior and two sophomores -- including Justin Vincent, the MVP of the SEC Championship Game and the BCS national championship game -- all of whom have more experience than Edwards.

He ranked fifth among LSU running backs with 169 yards last season and didn't score a touchdown. He played more on special teams, making five tackles in 11 games.

"With LSU's tailback situation, he was looking at a lot of competition this year and next," Chadwick said. "This gives him a chance to go where he could play a lot next year if he can handle sitting out for a year."

Edwards rushed for 2,289 yards and 30 touchdowns as a junior during Bowie's state championship run. Two major recruiting networks ranked him among the nation's top 10 running backs as a senior.

Chadwick said Edwards will visit North Carolina State with him Monday and is looking for a school that wants him, can get him in school by the start of the fall semester and has a scholarship available.

"At this time of year, a lot of schools don't have any left," he said.

Chadwick said he doesn't blame LSU for Edwards' decision to leave.

"It's not LSU's fault they have a lot of good running backs," he said. "They've recruited a bunch of good football players. That's why they're the defending national champions."

Earlier this summer, Saban lashed out at a local television station for reporting Edwards was no longer on the team -- and at writers for other media outlets who picked up on the story. Saban said Edwards and his family were upset by the reports.

At SEC Media Days last week, Saban didn't mention Edwards during a breakdown of LSU's depth at running backs.

BARRINGTON EDWARDS GONE:

Saban confirmed Tuesday night that sophomore running back Barrington Edwards of Bowie, Md., has left the LSU team.

"He's not coming back," Saban said following his speech. "We mutually agreed that he'd be looking for another school to transfer to, and I agreed to help him look for one."

Edwards was reportedly kicked off the team earlier in the summer, but Saban said at that time he was still on the team.

Edwards then appeared in the 2004 LSU football media guide released just last week with the following description:

"Explosive runner who adds to the depth at the running back position. ... heads into fall camp in a battle for carries at running back."

Edwards, who was a major recruit out of Bowie High School, gained 169 yards on 41 carries last season. He gained 2,289 yards with 30 touchdowns as a junior at Bowie High in 2001. He was not expected to be a major figure at tailback this season as he was behind fellow sophomores Justin Vincent and Alley Broussard and senior Shyrone Carey.

Ironically, Saban spoke Tuesday night about how Vincent went from a fifth team tailback last year to the cover of Sports Illustrated.
