SIMPSON UPDATE: Former Colerain High School running back Mister Simpson has enrolled at Clermont College, a UC branch campus, and is expected to be eligible to play for the Bearcats next season.

He can't practice with the team until he's enrolled on the main campus, which he was unable to do because the enrollment deadline had passed.

Simpson, a sophomore who received his release from Michigan last week, will be able to count this as his transfer season because he enrolled before Oct. 5, meeting the NCAA's rule that he had to enroll within 12 days of the start of the academic term. Simpson's mother, Denise, said that she and her son are scheduled to meet with Dantonio on Thursday.

"He just wants to come home," she said of her son. "He didn't particularly care that much for Michigan once he got there."

UC's Simpson wants eligibility

Former Colerain High School running back Mister Simpson, who transferred to the University of Cincinnati from Michigan last fall, must complete one more course this summer to become academically eligible to play in the fall, UC football coach Brian Kelly said.
Kerry Coombs, the UC defensive backs coach who coached Simpson at Colerain, said Simpson has worked hard to make himself eligible.
"He is dying to get back on the field," Coombs said.
Coombs said Simpson is working with a personal trainer so he's ready to go physically if and when he becomes eligible.
"I had a long heart-to-heart talk with Mister at the beginning of last quarter," Coombs said. "I told him, 'You're at your last hurrah. If you don't get this done, you have to find someplace else to play.' We're really focused on making sure our kids are getting the job done in the classroom. If not, we can't use you.

Simpson to miss 2007

Former Colerain High School running back Mister Simpson, who transferred to the University of Cincinnati last fall after one year at Michigan, will not play for the Bearcats this fall.

UC coach Brian Kelly confirmed Tuesday that Simpson did not qualify academically.

?He needed 27 hours,? Kelly said. ?He?s not going to be able to get enough hours to meet minimum eligibility requirements.?


Kelly said Simpson plans to continue to take classes at UC, although he cannot practice with the team.

Mister Simpson isn't giving up.

The former Colerain High School all-state running back learned Tuesday that he will not be academically eligible to play football at the University of Cincinnati this season, but instead of transferring to a Division I-AA or Division II program where he would be eligible to play immediately, Simpson has chosen to remain at UC and point toward 2008.

He'll have two years of eligibility remaining.
