Then it was time for Antoine Brown, as the senior running back’s 51-yard breakaway led to a big Portage score, completely shifting the momentum as the Indians went on to a 24-7 season-opening victory Friday night at Don Howell Field at Brickie Bowl.

“It was a big turnaround,” said Brown, who, after running for more than 2,000 yards last season, opened the 2004 campaign with 147 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

“A lot of people stepped up,” Brown added. “We didn’t want to lose this one.”

Antoine broke his leg with just 14 seconds left in a play-off game which his team had already "iced". At the time, the All-State running back had three scholarship offers - Kentucky, Wisconsin, and Northern Illinois; all were "pulled" after Antoine suffered his injury. Before his injury, Brown had amassed 1,574 yards and 21 TD's rushing during his senior season, and had posted times of 10.95 in the 100m, and 22.05 in the 200m.

The good news - Antoine healed in time to run track, and he was able to defend his sectional championships in the 100m (11.17) and the 200m (22.80); also, Antoine will attend Kentucky as a preferred walk-on.
