Glen Mason is trying to create a City league all star team- Wheelright, Russell, Valentine, Daniels, Jones and Massey.

He has now committed along with Dominic Jones

It didn't take long for the trickle-down effect to reach Columbus following the departure of head football coach Walt Harris from the University of Pittsburgh.

Dominic Jones, Brookhaven High School's 5-foot-9, 185-pound senior defensive back who committed to the Panthers at the beginning of last summer before leading the Bearcats to the Division II state championship, opted to join his half-brother Keith Massey as both committed to Minnesota following a visit there Dec. 10-12.

On Dec. 12, Harris officially accepted the head coaching job at Stanford.

"Throughout the recruiting process, Minnesota happened to be one of the schools that I really liked, Jones said. "I always had respect for them, because they were one of the first schools to ever offer me. After talking to (Minnesota coach Glen Mason) on the phone and then having a chance to see everything, I decided to commit there. And having my brother commit there too -- that was great."

Alex Daniels, an all-Ohio linebacker at Brookhaven, joined Jones and Massey on the trip to Minnesota and is expected to make a college choice in the coming days.

Jones was the first Pittsburgh signee to rescind his commitment following Harris' departure. Harris guided the Panthers to an 8-3 record and a BCS Bowl bid.

"When he had the visit (to Pittsburgh) in June, he saw the facility and met some of the players and was impressed by all that," Brookhaven coach Tom Blake said. "But the clincher was Walt Harris. Dominic really liked him and respected him. With Walt going to Stanford, D.J. kept his eyes open and decided to go somewhere else.

"(Jones) took a visit to Minnesota and liked Coach Mason and Mitch Browning (offensive coordinator/recruiter) and there was the opportunity for both he and his brother to play at the same school. You still have the city atmosphere, and I respect Glen and Mitch and they'll take care of the kids. I'm happy for the kids wherever they decide to go. If they're happy, I'm happy. I'm excited for them to get the opportunity to play Division I football at a good program."

Jones and Massey will join other former Columbus-area players and current Golden Gophers Ernie Wheelwright (Fr., 6-5, 210, WR) and Gary Russell (Fr., 5-11, 195, RB) from Walnut Ridge, Trumaine Banks (Soph., 5-10, 185, CB) and Justin Valentine (Fr., 6-2, 215, FB) from Eastmoor Academy, Mike Maciejowski (Fr., 6-3, 210, QB) from Upper Arlington and Quentin White (Jr., 6-0, 200, SS) from Gahanna.

Wheelwright was named to The Sporting News Freshman All-American Team (third team) and the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. He started nine of 11 games and had 30 receptions with freshman school-records of 654 yards and seven touchdowns. His 21.8 yards per reception was tops in the Big Ten.

"They made us feel so comfortable and so welcome. A lot of times, when players hear there's a top recruit coming in, they kind of stay away because they're afraid you might be coming in to take their position," said Jones, a two-time all-Ohio defensive back. "But each corner I did meet, they were so supportive. They were like 'This is what you need to do and this is how it is.' A couple of their players -- Ernie Wheelwright and Gary Russell -- we grew up in the same 'hood. And Valentine and Banks, we're all real cool.

"Coach Mason thinks I have a good chance to come in and play as a freshman. I'll be going there in June, and most freshmen usually show up in August, so I'll be able to get everything down. And I got my No. 2 (jersey) when I get there, so that's good."

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota cornerback and Brookhaven graduate Dominic Jones was charged yesterday with third-degree criminal sexual conduct after investigators said they found cell phone video that showed him in a sex act with a woman who was "physically helpless." Three other Gophers players remain suspects in the case, which began in April after an 18-year-old woman said she had been raped at an apartment complex near campus.
"The charges represent a significant next step in this case," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said. "The charge is a serious one."
Defensive end Alex Daniels, cornerback Keith Massey and running back E.J. Jones all were arrested and questioned in April. They have not been charged but have been suspended by coach Tim Brewster.
Like Dominic Jones, Daniels and Massey attended Brookhaven. Massey is Jones' half-brother.

This absolutley disgusts me. I have been in the night club industry for some time now, and seen the effect alcohol has on people. Jones should be punished to the fullest extent. That girl at a .30 b.a.l. had to be incoherent. That is pure rape regardless if she had sex willingly or not with the previous three players. That all means nothing if Jones shows up and she lays there lifeless. And then for the others to record it... awful!

A friend of Jones had taken a video of part of the assault on his cell phone at the apartment that night. The file was deleted, but forensic experts examining the phone were able to recover a portion of the deleted file. The female in the video was unresponsive and was identified as the victim. The male in the video was identified as Jones.

"It's amazing what the forensics can do to reconstruct that. That cell phone video ... A picture is worth 1,000 words, and that video reflects what happened, at least at that point in time," said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman. "The charges represent a significant next step in this case. The charge is a serious one."

Freeman stressed that three other players -- Alex Daniels, E.J. Jones and Keith Massey, Jones' half-brother -- are still suspects in this case months after being arrested and then released.

"No charges will be filed against those individuals today," Freeman said. "We're going to take this case one step at a time. Each of them remains suspects and we're going to continue to review each of the cases."

Hennepin County District Court Judge Marilyn Rosenbaum pushed the third-degree criminal sexual conduct trial back from mid-November to March 31 at the request of Jones' lawyer, Earl Gray, who argued that the defense needed more time to prepare its case.

Jones' trial on criminal sexual-conduct charges is scheduled to start Monday in Hennepin County District Court. In a two-page filing this week, lawyer Earl Gray explained for the first time how he will defend Jones. He declined an interview, but the sexually explicit filing outlined Jones' version of events.

Except for a couple of major points, prosecutors and defense lawyers in the Dominic Jones trial Wednesday laid out remarkably similar scenarios: A year ago today, a handful of college football players were partying and drinking with some underage women, and things took a perverse turn.

One of the women ? then just shy of her 20th birthday ? had consumed way too much 80-proof vodka. She passed out, and when she awoke a few hours later, her jeans were down around her knees, her panties were stuffed in one of her pockets and there were splotches of a dry, crusty substance on her face.

Assistant Hennepin County Attorney Marlene Senechal told jurors the woman had no idea how she got that way, but when investigators pieced the puzzle together, they concluded Jones had had sex with a near-comatose woman, then straddled her and ejaculated on her face.

"She was physically helpless and we would ask you to find him guilty as charged," Senechal told jurors in her opening remarks at Jones' trial.

Former Gopher sentenced for sexual conduct



MINNEAPOLIS (AP)?Former Minnesota football player Dominic Jones was sentenced Thursday to a year in the county workhouse after being convicted of criminal sexual conduct.
Hennepin County District Judge Marilyn Rosenbaum also sentenced the 21-year-old to a stayed four-year prison term, $1,000 restitution and seven years probation.
He will be allowed to leave the workhouse only for school or work. He must report there by July 7.
At the hearing, Jones apologized ?first and foremost? to his family, friends and ?anyone who was affected negatively in this situation.? He said he hopes to learn from the situation and wants other students and athletes to see him as an example of what can happen.
In March, a jury convicted him of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, which involves performing a sex act on a victim without her consent. It acquitted him on a rape charge.

Earl Gray, Jones? attorney, said he will appeal the conviction and the sentence.
Jones testified that the victim consented to the sex act in April 2007.

Former University of Minnesota football star Dominic Jones offered some high school football players $100 recently if they could come up with his previous jersey number and his current one.

One raised his hand and said Jones was No. 2 as a Gopher. Correct.

Nobody knew his current number. "Number 00425759. That's my number," Jones said. "My name now is Inmate. It's not Dominic Jones."

In the past year, the 21-year-old Jones has gone from an admired team leader with realistic NFL dreams and a college diploma within reach to a sex offender serving a one-year sentence in the Hennepin County workhouse.

During his first public interview since he was charged last summer, Jones spoke about personal responsibility, college sports and his journey.

"I am not blaming a white man. I am not blaming a prosecutor. I'm not blaming a judge. I'm blaming me. That was hard for me to do at first," he said. "I'm human. I made a mistake."
