Indiana linebacker A.J. Edds (6-4, 217, 4.6) looks like he is on the verge of getting some offers from more of his favorite programs. He's looking to pare his favorites down to a top two or three by the time the season starts.

Linebacker A.J. Edds (6-4, 217, 4.6) was recently offered by Kentucky. He claims previous rides from Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Boston College, Louisville, Stanford and Vanderbilt.

"Right now, my top five consists of Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue, Georgia Tech and Ohio State. I haven't been offered yet by Iowa, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech or Ohio State, but I'm in contact with the coaches there," said Edds, from Greenwood Community High School in Greenwood (Ind.).

"I'm mostly being recruited as an outside linebacker. But other programs really like me as a tight end. Right now it varies with all the schools pretty much. Only time will tell where I'll end up playing in college. I know I fit the profile well as a linebacker on defense, but if I can get more playing time from a program on offense then I'll probably do that.

"I've already been to JR Days at Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Tennessee and Michigan. This summer I'm going to take camps at Iowa, Ohio State and Georgia Tech. Iowa is looking at me more for defense as well as Purdue. But Georgia Tech told me that they'll have a good idea of where they want me after I take in their camp," he said.

"I've got some high interest in Iowa's program. Coach (Eric) Johnson (rec coord/tight ends) was recently at my school and he got to talk a lot with my head coach. They only recently found out about me and they seem very enthusiastic about recruiting me. They play some great football over there. It sounds like their offer pertains to how well I'll do at their camp.

"Wisconsin hasn't recruited me much until just recently. They've come into the picture for me pretty late, but one of their coaches told me that they wouldn't be recruiting me if they were not seriously considering an offer.

"Purdue is recruiting me the hardest out of that top five. Coach (Mark) Hagen (defensive tackles/special teams) is the one recruiting me, and I'm going to take a pretty hard look at them throughout all of this," he said.

"Before I go to Iowa's program for camp, I'm going to head out to Illinois for an unofficial visit. I think that coach (Ron) Zook is taking the program in the right direction, and they've got a good class coming in. Originally, they were looking at me for OLB but now their thinking tight end.

"After I head out to Iowa's camp I'll also go to Wisconsin for an unofficial visit," he said.

"I should have a solid list of two to three schools by the time the season starts. I'll commit to a program during the season if I'm ready.

Final JR (9-3) stats: 70 solo tackles/69 assists/139 total tackles/12 TFL/4 sacks/4 INTs; 25 rec/544 yds/5 TDs "I drop back well in pass coverage on defense and I'm good at reading what quarterbacks and receivers are going to do. I've got great aggressiveness from sideline-to-sideline on defense and I've got some great size ad speed. I'm also great at man coverage on offense and I've got good hands," he said. 3.8 GPA/1190 SAT (old version)--"I'm undecided if I'll take the SAT again. I don't know how my old score will affect the admissions process at some of the other schools. So that's why I might take it again. I know that I'm fully qualified though."

LJB's take: It is interesting that Ohio State is the only school in A.J.'s top five which hasn't offered - I suspect that a Buckeye offer would move Ohio State to the top of his list. A.J. is supposed to attend OSU's camp next weekend, and it will be interesting to see whether he earns an offer from the staff.

It’s been an incredibly busy spring and early summer for Greenwood high school (Ind.) linebacker A.J. Edds, and things are still moving at a rapid pace. He’s received several new offers and he has one more camp to attend before he calls it quits this summer.

A.J. Edds is a fantastic athlete that could play several positions at the college level. Notre Dame is recruiting him at linebacker, but they have yet to offer him a scholarship even though Edds has made several trips to the Notre Dame campus. Last time we spoke to A.J. he had made plans to attend the Notre Dame football camp on June 25.

“I actually am not going because they (Notre Dame) have their camp the same day as Ohio State,” Edds explained. “At this point the correspondence from Notre Dame and the coaching staff, to me, is virtually nonexistent. I get something once every couple weeks that that they send out in bulk, so it’s kind of sent the message that there isn’t much interest there. That’s all right with me because I realize that not every staff is going to want the same guys.

“Ohio State, on the other hand, the coach that’s recruiting me sends me something hand-written a couple times a week, so being that the camps are on the same date it’s making me lean more to going to Ohio State than Notre Dame at this point.

“If there would have been more correspondence from their (Notre Dame) staff, things might have been different, but I never really got that signal that they were really that interested in me.

“They might have guys for various reasons in positions higher than me. That’s understandable. I’m not going to be a guy that every school wants, just like I’m not going to want to go to every school. But you’d think with Notre Dame, and the two commitments out of Indiana, that they have a pretty firm hold on Indiana, so you’d think that there would be that level of correspondence and the level of attention would be higher.

“Like I said, different schools have different approaches, so that’s where were at,” he added.

In the past Edds had mentioned that he was going to a number of other camps, so I asked how they went.

“I went to Georgia Tech and Iowa and I got offers from both of them when I was at their camps,” Edds replied.

“Iowa and Purdue are pretty high, they’re probably my top two, and then Georgia Tech is a close third. Everyone else would then be right there,” Edds said

“If I were to take my official visits, and if I only had time for three, it would be Iowa, Purdue and (Georgia) Tech at this point.”

Comments: There will be some disappointed Notre Dame fans, as a number of them were hoping to see A.J. come from camp with an offer, but it doesn’t appear that Notre Dame is going pursue A.J. as heavily as other linebacker prospects. It would have been great if he had made it to the Notre Dame camp so he could have performed in front of the coaches, but it appears that he is heading for Columbus that day.

Gary Housteau said A.J. is supposedly finding out today if tOSU will offer. He chose to come to tOSU's camp instead of ND so now ND will not offer him.

Has anyone heard more buzz for one of these LBs since they both were in camp this past weekend. I wonder if OSU would offer both of them (not sure if they project to play the same LB spot)? Since it does not look like Mixon will be headed to C-bus it seems like another LB offer may be coming.
