Fields has offers from Pitt and West Virginia, he is hearing from Louisville, UNC, Ohio State, Oklahoma and a lot of other schools. He is going to camp at Pitt.

Fields caught 23 passes for 591 yards as a junior, earning first team all-conference honors.

DUQUESNE

It may seem that all of the focus surrounding the Duquesne Dukes football program this season is on Elijah Fields, and with good reason.

Fields is perhaps the top skill player in the Eastern Conference. Now that running back Shane Brooks graduated and went to Pitt following the Dukes' co-champions of the Eastern Conference last season, Fields, a senior wide receiver/safety, may have the opportunity to join him in Oakland as the Panthers have already offered a scholarship to him.

Then again, so has West Virginia, and Ohio State also has shown some interest.

But Fields, who caught 23 passes for a 23-yards-per-catch average last year, is not the Dukes' only major-college football prospect.

The scene was just about two years ago, and Duquesne High School was going through warm-ups before a humid, Saturday afternoon game against nemesis Clairton.

One sinewy but somewhat thin receiver wearing a Duquesne uniform was running streaks down the sideline. As he went up, he came down and deftly dragged both feet in bounds, securing the ball and tucking it away in one, quick motion.

Just then, Duquesne coach Pat Monroe stuck out his index finger and pointed toward the player in question.

"That kid is going to be a player," Monroe said. "I'm telling you, if he works hard, he's going to be one of the best we've ever had."

Fast forward to now, when that same kid has risen from a sophomore beginning to open some eyes to a well-known commodity by the name of Elijah Fields, a senior receiver who is being courted by some major college programs and who made Monroe's prediction come true.

"After my sophomore year, I just kind of knew that there were some older guys in front of me but I was going to be counted on," Fields said. "That's when I knew I had to have better work ethic and I had to work hard if I wanted to be a leader when I was a senior."

Fields, at 6 feet 2, 200 pounds, was named all-Eastern Conference last year as he pulled in 23 passes for 527 yards, a 22.9-yard average. There were only two receivers in the WPIAL who caught at least 23 passes and had a higher yards-per-catch average.

This season, Monroe and the Dukes are looking to Fields to do even more.

"He was always a fluid athlete, from the time he was young," Monroe said. "But he had a slight build and that was something that Elijah had happen for him, he got bigger. Since his frame has gotten bigger, he's become more of a threat because he always had the individual skills, but now he is able to be a little more physical."

And because of that, because he has become a complete receiver with a penchant for throwing big downfield blocks, Fields also has forced some major Division I recruiters to take notice. Pitt, West Virginia, Akron, Miami (Ohio), Toledo, Kent State and Marshall have offered scholarships. In recent weeks, Penn State and Ohio State have upped their contact with Fields, and although neither has offered a scholarship, Fields said there's a good chance both might after seeing him play in some early season games.

"I just know that I have to work hard this year," Fields said. "I really think I can play for any college, it's just up to someone taking a chance on me."

And neither Monroe nor Fields think it will be a factor that the receiver competes in Class A. Monroe, especially, thinks the time has come and gone where college recruiters are skeptical about players who play at some of the area's smallest schools.

"With Class A linemen, sometimes people question what they really can do, but I think it is different with skill position guys," Monroe said. "There are all those combines and camps and things, and when a kid shows up and puts up certain numbers it's pretty clear what he can do. Before, in the past, there might be some question about Class A kids, but with someone like Elijah, people know he could produce at any level."

I like this kid a lot, probably partly due to his cool nickname. Good height and weight if the numbers are correct. Not too many 200 lb. freshman recievers. I'd love to see him in this class with Chichester and Small.

Hate to feel like I'm correcting ya, but you named 4 teams there. What's the 5th team going after him?

If our other wr prospects don't work out like we hope, I think this kid could fit in real well.
