An injury, a letter, and an Internet explosion
USC's Hazelton featured on popular blog after father sends letter to coach Carroll
Tuesday, October 21, 2008 By DANIEL O'LEARY
STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The sports "blogosphere" was abuzz this weekend with a letter sent from Dexter Hazelton, the father of University of Southern California wide receiver and former Moore Catholic star Vidal Hazelton, to Trojans head coach Pete Carroll, alleging poor medical treatment to his son this year and a misdiagnosis of Vidal's injuries in 2007.
The letter was originally crafted on Sept. 1, and Dexter Hazelton stated that he was "perplexed by the lack of attention that (the USC) training staff is giving to Vidal's injuries." He also cited a misdiagnosis by USC's medical staff in 2007, when Vidal apparently played with a double hernia in his stomach. Vidal had hernia surgery this offseason.
On Thursday, a message board called "SC Playbook" on the Web site Scout.com posted the letter in its entirety. In an interview with the Advance last night, Dexter Hazelton said that he was not responsible for the letter hitting the Web.
"I don't know how the letter got out there. I have no idea," he said. "When I sent it, I cc'd to a number of people because normally he (Carroll) doesn't even check his email. When he finally got it, that same day he called me and we dealt with the situation right there. That's just how I normally deal with him. Everything I do, I do it in writing."
