Arvell seems to be getting into some serious trouble.

Gary Barta is familiar with the Facebook.com phenomenon.

And he's seen some of the disturbing images various users of the social Web site choose to post on their personal pages.

But the pictures Iowa's director of athletics had land on his desk this week were particularly troubling. In them, four members of the Hawkeyes' football team are shown flaunting empty alcohol bottles, flashing apparent gang signs and handling large sums of cash.

All of the players are under 21.

Backup QB turns himself in

University of Iowa backup quarterback Arvell Nelson, who was wanted by authorities for failure to appear at an initial court appearance, turned himself into authorities and posted a $545 cash bond, court records show.

Records show Nelson, 18, was charged on July 2 with driving with a suspended license. He was scheduled to have his initial court appearance on Aug. 16, but didn?t show and a warrant was issued that day for failure to appear.

Nelson posted the cash bond on Tuesday. His next court appearance has not been set.

yeah I know....it really is a shame. However, I have to say that sometimes people forget how young these kids are. They are victims of their age. People need to stop thinking of them being role-models just yet. He hasn't "failed" just yet!

Football's not everything to a student.....if Arvell learns from this and channels it into his studies, he's gonna be orright! Peace!

I think Arvell may be more of a victim of his environment. Glenville's a pretty rough school. I don't know about his family life but it seems a lot of kids there don't have any guidance other than from TG Sr. and he can't watch over all of them.

I couldn't agree more! I think people need to understand that before they post things like the kid has "failed"! It's a little harsh in my opinion. Also, football is secondary to getting a college degree.

Jeez...rough crowd...I didn't mean he's a "failure"...just that at this particular endeavor where he had a fair opportunity...he "failed" to take advantage of that opportunity. No question his life is not over, hopefully he realizes that, learns and moves forward positvely...but I do have to disagree that he's somehow a "victim"! I agree age and environment play a factor but ultimately its up the kid to see the light...

I was also going to hop in and say, let's not be too quick to paint this kid as a "victim." He got caught with weed...how is that being a "victim"?

I know environment plays a huge role in how people shape their worldview/lifestyle, but I'm not so quick to all of a sudden say that a kid with a full-ride $100K scholarship (out of state tuition) is a victim when he chose to do what he did.

I'm saddened by it and hope for the very best, I don't want him, or anyone to fail, and I'd love to see him succeed. Hopefully he isn't considering himself a victim and instead goes out and makes a good life choice to take advantage of the next opportunity he gets.

I agree completely. I don't think he's the victim of this crime. I was just saying growing up in that type of environment influences your decision-making.

They are intertwined inevitably but there is no black and white which causes which. Either way it's a shame that it's like that. Hopefully Arvell gets his act together and gets back into school (if he's kicked out?).

Once a promising quarterback at Iowa, Arvell Nelson of Glenville (Cleveland, Ohio) / Fort Scott, Kan., has pledged to New Mexico State as a safety.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound prospect was dismissed by the Hawkeyes following misdemeanor drug charges.

Not sure what happened to New Mexico State, but Nelson is now listed as being already enrolled at Texas Southern, and back at QB.

Ohio State wide receiver Ray Small says Arvell Nelson, pictured above playing for Cleveland?s Glenville High in 2005, is the best quarterback to ever play for the Tarblooders. Nelson, who now plays at Texas Southern, was at Iowa before an arrest for drug possession saw him dismissed from the team.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In 2006, two Cleveland-area high school quarterbacks went to play for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Saturday, one of them will return to Ohio Stadium on crutches, starter Ricky Stanzi of Lake Catholic sidelined by an ankle injury suffered last week. The other one could have been stepping in to fill the void against the Buckeyes.

Instead, Glenville's Arvell Nelson will be playing on ESPNU tonight, his time at Iowa having ended long ago.

In February 2008, Nelson was arrested for possession of marijuana and dismissed from the team. He pleaded guilty and wound up playing safety at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas last season.

This season, he's the quarterback for Texas Southern in FCS-level football, formerly known as Division I-AA, leading the Tigers to a 4-4 record going into their game against Grambling State tonight. ESPNU will televise the game at 9 p.m. Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes will be starting a redshirt freshman in James Vandenberg against the Buckeyes in part because Nelson and former starter Jake Christensen, who transferred to Eastern Illinois, both left the program.

"He would have been the next up," Ohio State senior receiver Ray Small, a Glenville teammate of Nelson, said this week. "Arvell had all the intangibles for the game. He just needed that coach. I feel like Arvell's the best quarterback to come out of Glenville."
