Gotta wonder how this embarassing 3-game stretch will affect ND recruiting.

Kids want to be part of a winning program. Or one that at least looks like it has a plan.

On the other hand, you have to feel good about your chances to get playing time if you go there. It would seem that very few players have a lock on their position.

Let's hope ND and NIU meet in the Weed Eater Bowl in a couple of years!

This weekend they have highly rated 5* DE (#4 - Scout) Chancey Aghayere out of Garland, Texas, 4* RB (#24 - Scout) Ryan Williams from Manassas VA, and 4* RB (#36 - Scout) Chris Harper out of Kansas on officials.
There should be plenty of copy and feedback on their degree of overwhelment or frigidity come Sunday or Monday.

Mmm - interesting quote from NIU AD Spokesperson:

Northern Illinois sports information director Donna Turner said the Huskies are at their scholarship limit for the 2007 season anyway and that Jones hasn’t been cleared to practice yet as he is going through university processing on his transfer.
“He could still talk to our coaches and participate in practices,” Turner said. “Just as a walk-on.”

Putting this in context - NIU cannot give Jones a schollie even if ND did release him from their hold this year. This years college costs for Jones are going to have come from loans.

Demetrius Jones, who was the starting quarterback for Notre Dame's season-opening loss to Georgia Tech, is transferring to UC, coach Brian Kelly said Thursday.
Jones will be in school on Monday.
Jones, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound sophomore, saw no action at Notre Dame as a freshman.

Doesn't really surprise me much. That place is totally different from when I went to school there. The sports facilities (excluding the bball facilities) are incredible compared to what they were. That, plus being in the Big East makes it a completely different draw for student athletes today.

Yep - here's pertinent information on his schollie and eligibility. For those schools looking to pick up transfers after a season's started, the quarter system is an advantage.

The Bearcats won't have an open scholarship until several players graduate in December. Jones will pay his way until then, and is scheduled to start classes on Monday.

Under NCAA rules, a player must be enrolled prior to the 12th day of classes to be eligible for the next season. Cincinnati didn't start classes until last week, making it attractive to Jones.

Ex-starter Grutza, transfer Jones top candidates for QB job

With Ben Mauk no longer in the picture for next season, University of Cincinnati football coach Brian Kelly said Thursday that senior Dustin Grutza would be the Bearcats' starting quarterback if the season were to start today.

But Grutza, a two-year starter before Mauk arrived last year to claim the position, will have plenty of competition for the starting job, with most of it expected to come from Notre Dame transfer Demetrius Jones.
"He's clearly one of the best athletes I've had at the position," Kelly said. "He fits our system very well. He's got two of the three qualities that he needs. He fits the system and he's very athletic. The third one is how he responds when it's a live situation and he has to make decisions."
"We won't know that until the spring," Kelly said.
Jones was Rivals.com's No. 2 "dual threat" quarterback when he signed with the Irish.
