VIRGINIA BEACH — Unfortunately for host Cox, quarterback Donnie Kirby found a career-best comfort zone in his fifth start for No. 1 Landstown on Friday night.

The senior transfer from Great Bridge dissected the Cox secondary for 438 yards and seven touchdown passes in a 56-0 victory that was the defending state champion’s 19th in a row.

''I finally started to feel comfortable with the offense,’’ said Kirby, who completed 28 of 37 attempts in three quarters. ''Coming here was like a dream come true with receivers like Percy (Harvin) and Damon (McDaniel), who can turn any play into a touchdown.’’
Landstown’s receiving duo riddled the Falcons repeatedly on short and intermediate routes. Harvin finished with 10 receptions for 242 yards and three scores. McDaniel checked in with 13 catches for 152 yards and four touchdowns.
“We can still get better, but this was the closest we’ve come to getting it all together,’’ Kirby said.

Landstown coach Chris Beatty said it takes time for any quarterback to get accustomed to a new offense.

''We worked on some little mechanical flaws with Donnie this week,’’ Beatty said. ''He listened and began showing what he can do in this game. I’m happy with his progress. I’ll take 438 passing yards every time.’’

After a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles rang up six touchdowns in a little more than 10 minutes of the second period.

Kirby highlighted that scoring blitz with three short touchdown passes to McDaniel and 58- and 62-yard strikes to Harvin. Linebacker Lawrence Brown returned an interception 41 yards for the other score in the outburst.

The closest the Falcons (1-3) came to scoring was a drive that stalled at the Landstown 14-yard line with 10:23 remaining.

Reserve quarterback Levy Pric added 89 yards to Landstown’s passing total of 527.

I saw two of those touchdowns on local channel 3's highlights, and he looked good doing it. One pass was a floater to the endzone that McDaniel had to come back on and jump over the DB to catch.

From the FSU site...Damon has recorded 18 receptions for 364 yards and six touchdowns plus a punt return for a TD. He has visited Florida and has visits set up to LSU, Miami, Virginia Tech. His last visit will either be to OSU or FSU.

McDaniel had another big game; I wouldn't mind OSU getting that last visit. It looks like he had 8 receptions for 145 yards, including a 75 yard touchdown.

Landstown gets ''good practice'' in the rain

VIRGINIA BEACH — Rain? What rain?

You’d think that torrential rains and blustery winds might slow down the pass-happy Landstown football team.

But Friday’s 40-0 victory over Ocean Lakes proved otherwise.

Landstown, the top-ranked team in South Hampton Roads and the state, amassed 461 yards of total offense in conditions that were tough to simply walk in.

The Eagles (6-0) threw for 239 yards in the slimy muck and ran their string of Beach District victories to 28 games.

Quarterback Donnie Kirby completed 18 of 31 passes for 225 yards and connected on a pair of touchdown tosses. Kirby’s first pass was proof enough that the Eagles weren’t going to let a little bad weather take them out of their game plan.

On the first play of the game, Kirby hit Damon McDaniel with a 75-yard scoring pass. McDaniel made Kirby look good on the play, coming back under the defense for the slightly underthrown pass before darting across the field and past the defense en route to a 6-0 lead.

“You can’t let the conditions slow your game down,” Kirby said. “We’re just not going to let something like the weather stop us. Besides, we could have to play in something like this in the playoffs and this was good practice.”

And just in case the pass wasn’t working, Landstown showed it was capable of running the ball — rushing 24 times for 224 yards and four touchdowns.

Percy Harvin, who caught six passes for 60 yards and a 12-yard touchdown, ran nine times for 90 yards. He had touchdown runs of 3, 5 and 4 yards . Quinton Rainey added the Eagles’ sixth touchdown on a 13-yard run in the second quarter.

“We could have run on them even more if we wanted to,” said Kirby, who, like his fellow starters, sat out much of the fourth period. “If anybody thinks that they can count on the weather to slow us down, we showed them tonight that we can handle it.”

Landstown led 13-0 after the first quarter and 27-0 at the half, allowing Ocean Lakes (2-3) only two decent chances at the end zone. One drive ended in a missed field goal by Charles Ballweg from 27 yards.

I'm REALLY surprised that he dropped VA Tech. It had been rumored that they were co-leaders with Florida at this point.

Va Tech has some depth at WR/CB. Probably exploring better situations at other schools.

From the Florida site...Florida coaches are due to visit Damon this week. Coaches from FSU, VT, and LSU have been in recently. He will not visit Miami this weekend but hopes to reschedule. He says he would still like to visit Ohio State.

I think Damon would be rated even higher if he weren't on the same team with Percy Harvin. Damon is a phenomenal athlete.
