Mike Hartline Says OSU On Top
By Dave Biddle
Date: Dec 5, 2004
Quarterback Mike Hartline of Canton GlenOak is rated as one of the top signal callers in the Buckeye state. Hartline was down to Ohio State with brother Brian and talked with Dave Biddle a short time ago about the trip.
Quarterback Mike Hartline of Canton GlenOak visited Ohio State this weekend, along with his older brother Brian.
“It went great. I thought it was a real good experience,” Mike Hartline said.
Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez hosted Hartline.
“I didn’t really know him very much before this weekend,” Hartline said. “He kind of seemed quiet at the beginning, but he loosened up as we started talking to him more and more. I also hung with Dustin Fox, Bobby Carpenter, Nick Mangold, Todd Boeckman and Curt Lukens.”
Hartline also had a chance to meet with several of OSU’s coaches.
“We talked with Coach (Mel) Tucker a lot,” he said. “We saw Coach (Jim) Bollman a lot. Coach (Darrell) Hazell probably more than any other coach. I talked to Coach (Jim) Tressel here and there. I think it’s a great staff.”
Hartline is considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the Midwest. He says Ohio State is his top school, but he’s exploring all options.
“I’ll probably pick out four or five schools this summer after camps and analyze that,” he said. “I’m not sure if I’m going to commit before my senior season like my brother did, or I might wait a little longer, but I want to get it over as quick as I can.
“But after this weekend, I think Ohio State is probably the favorite now. I just went on that experience and saw everything and what the players do and it was a great experience. It was very helpful in the decision. So, I would say definitely Ohio State, and probably Purdue is another top choice.”
Hartline can see himself playing for Tressel, a QB coach at heart.
“I think, behind coaching, he’s a real social guy and a nice person,” Hartline said. “He’s very caring about everything and willing to listen about anything. He’s very humorous. He likes to just laugh and carry on. With him, it’s not really all about football. It’s more growing as a person, and I just love the way he puts that into his concept of football. I think he’s a tremendous coach.”
Sometimes, brothers want to do their own thing. They don’t want to always be tied to each other. But the Hartline brothers are tight. They want to play together in college.
“I’ve always wanted to play with him,” Mike said. “That’s why I was kind of disappointed about my junior season this year. He told me, ‘You have to come down here (to OSU) and finish what we started.’ Playing with him and being where he is is a big factor on what school I go to. That’s just a big decision, and going to Ohio State just makes me feel more comfortable because he’s there.”

sounds good but next year will be a great year for qb's in ohio so I wonder if we offer 2 OH QB's and how does Hartline compare to Schlicter (sp?) or Kurbus or Davis

I don't think we will take 2 qb's next year. With Robbie this year, and Hartline next year I just don't see it unless we get a top 10 or so.

so you think Miles won't receive an offer, IMO i think the talent is too great not to offer more than one quarterback with Zwick and Smith seniors or gone by the time these guys will arrive, plus we're not sure about the OOS'ers

Little doubt we take two QBs next year, if Schoenhoft is the only one we get this year. Here's our QB situation over the next few years, provided we take only Schoenhoft for this class:
2005:
Smith (junior)
Zwick (junior)
Boeckman (RS frosh)
Schoenhoft (true frosh)
2006:
Smith (senior)
Zwick (senior)
Boeckman (soph)
Schoenhoft (RS frosh)
Hartline (true frosh)
Schlichter (true frosh)
2007:
Boeckman (junior)
Schoenhoft (soph)
Hartline (RS frosh)
Schlichter (RS frosh)
You always want to have four QBs (three as an absolute minimum). Granted, taking two QBs in the 2006 class sort of overloads us for that season, but once Smith and Zwick are gone, we're back down to four scholarship QBs in 2007.

How about true freshman in 2007.
