Mission Viejo rolls despite mistakes
The Diablos overcome four turnovers in dealing Mater Dei a rare lopsided loss.

By CARLOS ARIAS
The Orange County Register

MISSION VIEJO – Top-ranked Mission Viejo had four turnovers against No. 7 Mater Dei, which usually would spell disaster for a team playing the Monarchs.

But not for the Diablos. Mission Viejo had so many weapons on offense and a bruising defense that it overcame its mistakes to run away with a 48-7 nonleague victory over Mater Dei in front of 7,300 on Friday night at Mission Viejo High.

The Diablos rushed for 393 yards, and star running back Chane Moline wasn't even the team's leading rusher on the night. Senior running back Keegan Gogerty took that honor with 152 yards on 11 carries, including a dazzling 85-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter to open the scoring for the Diablos.

Junior running back Brian Lockridge showed the future for the Diablos. Lockridge had two touches, taking the first one for a 48-yard touchdown and the second for a 51-yard touchdown.

The sole focus of the Mater Dei defense was to try to slow down Moline, but the 6-foot-2, 242-pound senior still turned in a workmanlike 119 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries.

The Diablos lost three of four fumbles in the first half but still had a 21-0 lead at the break.

"I think (Mission Viejo coach) Bob (Johnson) is not going to be pleased when he takes a look at the first half," Monarchs coach Bruce Rollinson said. "But they have so many weapons, and they play with so much confidence."

Diablos defensive end Kyle Hardman headed up the defensive effort with two sacks and he caught a 16-yard touchdown pass. He said was amazed by his team's offensive production despite the errors.

"We've got everything," Hardman said. "We can run the ball, and we can pass the ball. There is definitely room for improvement. We need to stop the fumbles and stop the turnovers."

Gogerty said the score might have been lopsided, but the intensity on the field from the Monarchs was not.

"They hit so hard," Gogerty said. "We knew that coming in. We had a few slips, but we kept our heads straight, came back and executed."

Mater Dei running back Ahmed Mokhtar ran for over 100 yards last week against Orange Lutheran, but the Diablos kept him in check. Mokhtar finished with 55 yards on 15 carries.

Rollinson said his freshman quarterback Matt Barkley got some valuable experience. Barkley was 4 of 12 for 41 yards, but he didn't have any turnovers.

"He'll understand more as the weeks go on," Rollinson said.

Mission Viejo, the defending Division II champion, improved to 3-0 and ran its winning streak to 17 games. Next up for the Diablos is Marina on Thursday at Westminster High before their Oct. 7 showdown against De La Salle of Concord.

The Monarchs find themselves in the unusual position of being 0-2 heading into another tough nonleague game next Friday against Foothill at Tustin High.

"We can chip our way back into this," Rollinson said.

Reuland has narrowed his list to six teams, he will release the names once he contacts all the coaches involved. UCLA has made the cut.

according to someone on the Recruiting board that calls themselves crazybuckeye, there is a major development with Konrad's recruitment. apparantly USC has pulled his offer. they are enamored with a TE in the Fresno area. if this is reliable info, this would assumably open Reuland up again.

Anthony McCoy from Bullard HS in Fresno is a STUD 6'4" 238. He was IMO the most impressive player at USC's senior camp. He played WR and outshined Ausberry, easily. He took some snaps at DE too. A beast. I was surprised that they did not offer him on the spot. Conversations with Pete later in the summer indicated to me that though they liked Konrad alot, they were not "enamored" with him. All this being said, no matter what player you are talking about, rest assured there's alot of info out there that has no or little basis. Completely unsubstantiated.
