While there are exceptions to the rule, as I said earlier, the time-proven fact is that if you excel at a top-notch school you will get drafted higher than if you excelled at a lesser school.

Fox gets drafted in the 3rd round. Body goes undrafted and signs a free agent contract with the Bengals. A steal if I ever saw one... Edit: If he played for the Bucks, he goes no lower than where Fox did... I would have put him late in round 2. At UT, he goes unnoticed and undrafted. I'll let y'all know how he pans out in the league. Last edited by BuckTwenty; 06-21-2005 at 05:56 PM. Reason: Forgot part of my point! |

![]() Actually, Kerr may not have even got drafted at Indiana had he stayed there. Indiana had one player drafted last year (WR Rody, round 3), one in 2003 (QB Hamdan, round 7), one in 2002 (QB Randle-El, round 2), and none in 2001. Kerr can't even find the field here, but we assume that Lenix will eventually be a starter for us...big difference. A starting LB for Ohio State has a better chance at getting drafted than a "star" at a lesser school. BuckTwenty: Excellent example...greens for you. There isn't one side that is right here, tho you (mili) also made it sound like there was earlier in the discussion.
The fact is there are studs that get stuck behind a deep depth chart and fall in the draft ratings. Yes certain players jump up higher based on doing well on a famous team, but plenty of others get drafted later or not at all because they were backups. As for expecting Lenix to start at LB, I'm high on him too but that's a little bit too kind. He has put on a good amount of muscle and might be able to become a Cie Grant type, but he still has a lot of growing to do. It is still very possible he becomes a safety, which might be our deepest position other than WR. |

My view is that for the exceptional talents, it doesn't really matter where a person goes to school. If you are one of the top 20 players in the nation, you'll be a first round draft pick.
However, for the mediocre prospects it could make a huge difference. My guess is that the NFL is will to give guys who played for a power school, in a power conference, against great competition a try before they give an equally suited player at a poor program a try. |

CleveBucks: Totally agree on the point about his being a near lock to start at Cincinnati. But even so, he still has to weigh the risk/reward potential here. I think he has the potential to start at least a year here, and that would be worth multiple years at Cincy, especially if he were to shine that year he started here.
18thAveBuck: Well said. As I've said several times now, they are the exceptions, and like you said, the very cream of the crop will get drafted no matter where they play. For the other 95% of the recruits, where they play ball makes the big difference. Lenix is in that 95% now, although he may end up being in that top 5% by the time all is said and done. And even if he is in that top 5% and ends up being a first-round pick, being an All-American at Ohio State vice at Cincinnati or some other mid-tier school could make the difference between being the first LB picked or the second LB picked--and also being picked several positions higher overall--which comes out to millions of dollars. |
