I asked about Elzy over at BN's. A lot of the Warren buffs were arguing his talent level, some think he's D1A talent, some think he wouldn't even start at a D1 High School team...

I seen Elzy against Steubenville Catholic Central. He's a good one, but I don't think he is a major D1 prospect. I look for him to suit up for a MAC team.

Notre Dame is his leader, he will be camping at ND, Michigan. He possibly will attend Ohio State and West Virginia's camps.

Elzy is getting mail from Michigan, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Maryland, North Carolina, Indiana, Oklahoma, Ohio State, and Iowa. Maryland, North Carolina, and Bowling Green have offered.

Anthony has visited Notre Dame, Michigan and Syracuse already. He will visit Maryland this weekend and North Carolina in the summer. Anthony has offers from Maryland, North Carolina and Bowling Green while Miami of Ohio and Akron are supposedly close to offering.

Elzy visited Maryland, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Syracuse. At this point, Notre Dame, Michigan and North Carolina are his top schools. He most likely will make a decision at the end of the summer.

Notre Dame is the lucky recipient of verbal commitments from the #2 ranked Midwest tailback, James Aldridge and the Irish also have a pledge from the top fullback in the region, Luke Schmidt, of Jasper, Ind.,

Kennedy's Elzy to become a Tar Heel

WARREN - Anthony Elzy will continue to don a blue football uniform once his high school gridiron career comes to an end.

Elzy, a senior running back at John F. Kennedy High School, has verbally committed to accept a full athletic scholarship offer from the University of North Carolina.


The son of Tony and Robin Elzy, Anthony informed the North Carolina coaching staff Monday of his decision. He visited the school in late July following visits to Syracuse, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Pittsburgh and Maryland.

Last season, Elzy (5-foot-9, 200 pounds) was named Ohio's Division V offensive co-player of the year. As a junior, he carried the ball 242 times, rushing for 2,443 yards and 30 touchdowns. He established several school records against Girard when he rushed for seven touchdowns and 422 yards.

Recent recruiting publications suggested Elzy would pursue a collegiate career at either Syracuse, Notre Dame or Pitt. North Carolina received little or no mention, and with good reason - Elzy himself never seriously considered the Atlantic Coast Conference school until his campus visit.

"In all honesty, even as I was heading down to North Carolina, I didn't expect anything to come out of the visit,'' Elzy said. "It's hard to say no to a Notre Dame or Syracuse, but as soon as I arrived at Chapel Hill, I fell in love with the place. Once I met with some of the staff, I knew I wanted become a Tar Heel.''

Elzy plans to pursue a degree either in criminal justice or education following his graduation from Kennedy.

"I always vowed that my number one priority in choosing a college would be academics. I'm convinced that with North Carolina I'll get the best of both worlds. They compete in one of the premiere conferences in the country, and I know I'm going to receive a first-rate education,'' Elzy said.

In 2004, North Carolina finished 6-6, posting impressive home wins over Miami and N.C. State. The Tar Heels fell to Boston College in the Continental Tire Bowl.

While committing to a college prior to the start of the high school football season wasn't a priority, Elzy admits he is relieved to put the recruiting merry-go-round behind him.

"It never got in the way of football or school work, so it never became a nightmare the way some athletes explain it, but at the same time I'm glad it's all over with,'' Elzy said. "Now, my only concern is winning football games for Kennedy. My senior season will be totally committed to focusing on team success.''



Kennedy coach Tony Napolet, who has seen his share of Division I talent during his 40-year coaching career, calls Elzy one of the best backs in Trumbull County history.

"Anthony's ability to make defenders miss, and his acceleration after a stop is simply unbelievable,'' Napolet said. "There were so many times when I thought he was bottled up, then the next thing I knew, he was down the field and in the end zone. His ability is quite remarkable.''

"Anthony has all the tools - he can do it all on the football field, and then some. In addition to being a great athlete, Anthony is an even better human being. He is an absolute class act in every aspect. You talk about a great kid coming from a great family - the area should be extremely proud to have such citizens.''

Napolet insists any concerns regarding Elzy's ability to play at the Division I level will quickly be erased.

"He's still developing, both physically and as a football player,'' Napolet said. "He'll give North Carolina every ounce of energy he has, I can guarantee you that. Put that together with the talent he already possesses, and you have a D-I athlete.'' Elzy and his Kennedy teammates open the season Aug. 26 at Newton Falls.
