I never saw that on the TV broadcast ...

Reminds of the time we were playing up at Wisconsin and Alvarez got so [censored]ed that he punched a hole in the chalkboard at halftime and a piece came back and sliced the bridge of his nose open.

Ticked off: Brown faults clock rule in loss to OSU

By Joe Schad
ESPN.com

Add Texas coach Mack Brown to the list of critics of the NCAA's new football clock rules.

Brown said Monday during the weekly Big 12 teleconference that the new rules, which were designed to limit the time of games, hurt the No. 8 Longhorns in Saturday's loss to No. 1 Ohio State.

"They scored with six minutes left and the game was over before we had a chance to do anything," Brown said. "I really hope whoever made these changes will go back and look them over."
Under the rule changes, the clock starts on a kickoff when the ball is kicked, not when the receiving team touches it; and on a first down, when the ball is marked ready for play, not when it is snapped.
Brown said while games are being shortened, the fans are being shortchanged.
"One of the great things about college football is a team's ability to come back," Brown said. "Now that's limited. Our game was 22 minutes shorter. That's a little under 10 percent of our game. That's not fair to our fans. We worry about them sitting there?"
Brown said, at worst, the old rules should be in place for the last two or five minutes of each game. Of the new rules, Brown said: "I hate it."

Without the new clock rules, it could have been 31-7 or 34-7 just as easily.

I thought that too. I'm keeping my eye on the Statesman today to see if such an article is posted.

Don't shoot the messenger, just relaying what I heard a Texas reporter say on Columbus radio.

Not shooting...just saying in all the time Mack has been here he is never anything but positive on the sideline...almost to a fault sometimes...and Colt didn't lose this game for us...grabbing him by the facemask in frustration would not only ruin him for the rest of that game but for the rest of the year.

I'm not disagreeing with you because I really don't know, but he sure doesn't look positive on the sidelines.

I realize he's yelling at the ref right there, but he looked quite disgruntled throughout the game whether he was yelling at someone or not.

Just saw that "Ticked off" article on ESPN.com. First, I don't think that headline fits the content of the article. Second, Joe Schad is the author, so I can dismiss the tone of the article to overplay Brown's understandable frustration with having lost a really important game.

Now, despite saying that, the prior report about Mack getting in McCoy's face, and the comment "They scored with six minutes left and the game was over before we had a chance to do anything," from Brown, out of context or not, indicates a coach that felt beaten and had given up. Both seem to agree with HL's statement earlier about being upset with the team essentially resigned to accept the loss with some of the late game playcalls, such as running on 3rd and 15.

I don't know really what to make of it. Davis handcuffed McCoy and abandoned the running game that was working so well, and Brown and Chizik both apparently scouted the wrong team thinking Smith and Ginn were going to run wild on the Texas D.

Texas has to come up with a lot of answers, and it starts with the coaches.

I think the "Vince Vibe" is something to look into, and not just on the field with his team or in the huddle, but with his coaches too.

Purely an accident and no hint of the aforementioned helmet pull by Mack Brown.

Kudos to Mack Brown for his handling of Brown & Gatewood.

2 Longhorns reinstated
Brown, Gatewood still face curfew, community service.
AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
Monday, September 11, 2006

Longhorn football coach Mack Brown on Monday reinstated Tarell Brown and Tyrell Gatewood, the players suspended last week after their arrests on misdemeanor drug and weapons charges.

Mack Brown said the two would be reinstated with several stipulations: They are subject to a curfew, they must perform community service and they will not be allowed to represent the team by speaking to the media.

Mack Brown indicated that the two had already faced punishment enough, especially because the drug charges against them were dropped Friday. The gun charge against Tarell Brown remains.

"They did miss the game of the year," Mack Brown said. "They were tried in the media ? some fair, some unfair, we thought."

He said the two would be allowed to compete to earn their positions back. Tarell Brown was a starting cornerback; he was again listed first at that position on the team's depth chart released Monday. Gatewood was a reserve safety and special-teams player.

"We will continue to move forward with those young men," Mack Brown said.

He said he did not regret his decision to suspend them for the Ohio State game. First, he said, it would not be safe for the player to be in a game after he faced a week of off-the-field distractions.

"Then it becomes bigger than No. 1 vs. No. 2 if they're around, and then it becomes a distraction for the team," he said.

Watched game tape again. Coach Brown's expression seemed to turn "worried" about end of 3rd. t.v. producer increased head shots of Brown on sidelines, probably to "increase" drama.

Brown's expressions in 4th reminded me a lot of Cooper in many big games for Bucks.

BTW, I think Brown is a 1st class coach and person. Texas is lucky to have his good character and personality as hc.

I was going to post the same thing, but didn't want to sound as if I were bashing Brown. I like Brown a lot, but he did look like Cooper's brother in the second half...
