Flyers make offer to rising Trotwood-Madison star Wright

Junior in national spotlight after strong AAU showings

INDIANAPOLIS | Trotwood-Madison High School's Chris Wright freely admits he's not a complete package yet, but college basketball coaches are convinced he'll become one someday.


The 6-foot-7 junior-to-be has vaulted in the national ratings with strong AAU showings this summer, and he has helped himself with his high-wire act at the Nike All-America basketball camp here this week.

Wright is perhaps the most devastating dunker at the invitation-only event. But he's been positioned on the perimeter often, and it's been an awkward adjustment.

"I have to work on my jump shot and ball handling," he said. "I've been playing with my back to the basket since I was little. Being out on the wing is a transition."

Wright said he has received a scholarship offer from the University of Dayton. And while he also has been promised full rides by Michigan, Xavier and Miami (Fla.), he has a fondness for the Flyers.

"I like it because it's home," he said. "It's a nice environment, and I love the arena."

Although many top local players have snubbed UD over the years, Wright said he could see himself staying in town because of a close relationship with his mother.

"Ever since I was little, she's never missed a game," he said. "If I go far away, it wouldn't seem right if my mom wasn't at the college, screaming and yelling my name."

But UD fans shouldn't break out the kazoos just yet. Wright plans to enjoy being a prized recruit for another year, and he's hoping to attract the interest of at least one more school.

"I really want to hear from Kentucky," he said. "I love that blue."

He is listed between 6'5 and 6'7. Last year, Trotwood had him pegged as 6'6. He made quite a bit of noise for an 18-5 Rams team that was very good, but I followed him throughout the year, and he was up and down. Still, getting big minutes and making a name for yourself in Trotwood is a nice start (John Lumpkin-OSU, Andre Hutson-MSU). Looks like he's got some nice offers, and he's shooting up the charts. A major player from Ohio to keep an eye on.

"I averaged 15 points and nine boards, and four assists."

How did your visit to Michigan go?

"It went really well. I liked it. I toured the campus, learned about the academics, and poke to the coaches."

What did Coach Amaker have to say to you?

"He said he really liked me. He said I reminded him of Dominique Wilkins."

Did Michigan offer you a scholarship?

"Yes."

What did your mom think of the visit to Ann Arbor?

"She liked it. She really liked Coach Amaker. She said he's funny. She really liked it. Being three hours away is close. It's not a long drive so she could just come up to see me play if I were to go there. She wants to be at every game."

Was she familiar with assistant coach Mike Jackson before the visit?

"Yeah, she teases him a lot calling him a traitor (laughing). Dayton is only five-ten minutes away from my house."

Any other unofficial visits scheduled?

"I'm going to go to Kentucky and I'm going to try to go down to Miami."

At the AAU nationals in Florida....Wright scored 18 points and 9 rebounds. Did not attempt a shout outside of 12 inches from the basket. Dayton, St. John’s, Illinois, Cincinnati and Iowa were at his game.

Opinions on Ohio's Chris Wright....

Dave, whats your take on Chris Wright? The game I saw at Disney he showed electrifying leaping and he seems to have great length to block shots but he also seemed limited at this point.

UCF: True. He's a super athlete. At the Hoop Jam he made some perimeter shots. In Orlando, he was coming off the spider bite and didn't attempt any perimeter shots in the games I watched. He's Brandon Foust athletically and if he can add a mid-range jumper he could be big time. We rated him at No. 20 before the summer and that was a little aggressive. He deserved to have his name out there so mission accomplished. He's more Top 50 right now but if he can add some skill to that ridiculous leaping ability you can see a little Dahntay Jones in him. Time will tell but he's a great kid and he's got a chance!

INDIANAPOLIS — Robbie Hummel is a high-school junior from Valparaiso, Ind. He grew up a fan of Purdue, but, as he continues to grow, has expanded his horizons.

He was 6 feet 5 not long ago. He is 6-7 now and growing into the kind of long and lean perimeter player Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta covets.

En route from New Jersey to Atlanta during the first week of the summer evaluation period, Matta stopped at the Nike All-America camp in Indianapolis last week to scout Hummel, among others. Hummel, with two more years of high-school ball to play, said he has been in touch with the OSU staff but has not been offered a scholarship. He said he’s "extremely" interested in the program.

What kid would not be right now? If Ohio State does not receive a commitment from another player in the class of 2006, it already has the year’s best recruiting class and one of the best of recent times. Commitments less than two weeks ago from 7-foot Greg Oden and point guard Mike Conley of Indianapolis, added to earlier nods from wings Daequan Cook of Dayton and David Lighty of Cleveland, give the Buckeyes four of the top 26 prospects in the class, according to a consensus of five recruiting rankings. Oden ranks No. 1 on the list and Cook is No. 8.

"That class is unbelievable," Hummel said. "But then you have to say to yourself, ‘Will I even get to play with that team?’ They’re loaded. So I guess it’s kind of a double-edged sword."

That’s the fine line Matta and his staff walk as they try to, one, put the finishing touches on their recruiting Class of 2006 and, two, build on it with another layer of stars from the class of 2007.

The first of the two 10-day evaluation periods in July started Wednesday with elite invitational camps in Indianapolis, Atlanta and Teaneck, N.J. The second period, July 22-31, includes AAU team tournaments in Las Vegas, Orlando and Los Angeles.

Matta and his staff have three scholarships left to offer the Class of 2006 and another three for 2007. While acknowledging the NCAA could take one or more of those in sanctioning the program for the transgressions of the previous coaching staff, Matta said he has not been told that is inevitable. And if all of the scholarships are spoken for before penalties are levied, he added, "I don’t think they can take (away a commitment) we’ve already got."

For the moment, he and his assistants are working hardest at getting a commitment from an elite power forward to complete a so-called Thad Five class of 2006 that recruiting analysts say would eclipse Michigan’s 1991 Fab Five as the best ever — or at least since classes began being ranked 25 years ago.

Highest on the list of power forwards appear to be two top-10 prospects, 6-8 Thaddeus Young of Memphis, Tenn., and 6-8 Vernon Macklin of Portsmouth, Va., and 6-7 Luke Harangody of Merrillville, Ind. Harangody is rumored to be leaning elsewhere, however. He skipped the Nike camp and could commit as soon as this week, his father said, to Notre Dame, Purdue or Ohio State.

Next on that list could be 6-8 Raymar Morgan of Canton McKinley, who has not been offered a scholarship but could be soon if he continues competing as aggressively around the basket as he did the first two days of the Nike camp. He said OSU coaches told him earlier this summer to "rebound the heck out of the basketball."

Morgan, who has been offered scholarships by Michigan State and Michigan, said he is intrigued by the possibility of being the fifth member of an unparalleled recruiting class.

"Those guys are all very gifted," he said. "It would be a pleasure to play with them."

But what about following them to Ohio State? Could their presence steer the studs of the class of 2007 elsewhere for playing time, as Hummel suggested? Highly rated guard Eric Gordon of Indianapolis, who plays on the same AAU team with Conley, Cook and Oden, does not list the Buckeyes among his favorites, possibly for that reason.

Matta said he does not think it is difficult to attract two great classes back-to-back.

"If you look at elite programs, that’s what they do," he said. "I think good players want to play with good players. I think that’s become a trend. You see that in the NBA now. Guys want to win."

That opinion is shared by one of the rising talents in the Class of 2007, 7-foot Kosta Koufos of Canton GlenOak. A few months ago, Koufos was rated a Mid-American Conference prospect. After an impressive spring on the AAU circuit and an MVP performance at a national tournament in St. Louis last month, he has offers from Ohio State, Michigan, Xavier and Miami (Fla.) and interest from Duke, Maryland, Illinois and Stanford.

Koufos’ comments in Indianapolis seemed to imply that Ohio State, even if Oden sticks around for more than a year, might be the team to beat for a kid whose parents graduated from the university and who grew up a Buckeyes fan.

"That national championship is all I care about," he said. "If I (sit on) the bench and don’t play at all, winning is the goal."

Koufos also spoke of potentially teaming inside with another highly rated Ohioan in his class, 6-8 Dallas Lauderdale of Solon. He and Lauderdale are part of a talented 2007 in-state class that also includes 6-4 O.J. Mayo, 6-5 Bill Walker and 6-11 Keenan Ellis of Cincinnati North College Hill, 6-5 Chris Wright of Trotwood and 6-6 Jon Diebler of Upper Sandusky.

"We’ve got all the Ohio people coming to Ohio State," Koufos said. Or, in Matta’s dreams, at least as many as he has room for.

Over the course of the summer, Ohio’s best boys basketball players showed their stuff in various AAU and summer camp events from coast to coast.
These events helped Ohio’s best players earn reputations as the nation’s very best. The national rankings supplied by ScoutHoops.com are dotted with players from Ohio.

Five of the current seniors are in the national top 100, led by Dayton Dunbar’s Daequan Cook at No. 16. Even better is the Class of 2007, where seven Ohio prospects are listed among the top 50. That group is led by the North College Hill duo of O.J. Mayo and Bill Walker, ranked first and fourth nationally, respectively.

The sophomore class in Ohio also boasts two of the nation’s top 15 prospects, including Cincinnati Hughes’ Yancey Gates at No. 5.

“You would be hard pressed to go back and find three years consecutively where there is this type of talent in the state of Ohio,” said HoopScoopOnline.com Ohio editor Chris Johnson. “And there is not only talent but also some size. In that sophomore class, there are four or five really good players who are already 6-8 or taller.”

The Ohio talent quotient would be even better if Herb Pope, a 6-8 forward considered a top-10 national junior, had followed through with his stated plan to transfer to a school in Ohio. Instead, he began the new school year at his old school in Aliquippa, Pa.

With the summer camp and AAU season over, Johnson has reassessed his lists of Ohio’s top prospects and updated them. The following is a look at the top prospects in each class in Ohio high school boys basketball, as rated by Johnson.

Juniors-To-Be (Class of 2007)

* 8. Chris Wright, 6-7, power forward, Trotwood-Madison (SH, 46th) – Johnson on Wright: “He is a tremendous athlete. He is as good an athlete as Tyus. He rivals Tyus and Walker in athletic ability. There is not a state in the country that has three dunkers like Wright, Tyus and Walker.”

Wright lists Ohio State, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State and Cincinnati.

I know OSU fans have reason to be excited about the future, but it's quite interesting to see what is happending at UD. Brian Gregory is building a program that will be in the top 25 each and every year.
