 Columbia (SC) Richland Northeast Height: 6-foot-3 Weight: 190 pounds 40-yard dash: 4.45 seconds Only a rising junior, Mark has already picked up offers from Clemson, Kentucky, South Carolina, Wake Forest and NC State. He is considered the favorite to be the top prospect in SC next season. According to his Rivals profile, Mark has an early interest in tOSU. As a Sophomore, Barnes compiled 75 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 10 pass deflections while garnering 21 catches for over 400 yards and 4 touchdowns on offense. Also, he blocked 2 punts and a field goal on special teams. Mark attends Richland Northeast HS in Columbia, SC. Rivals $ Videos Personal Take: Mark was impressive on the defensive side of the ball with good ball skills and solid tackling. He works very well in space. Although he is showing early interest in tOSU, the in-state schools and Georgia will try to secure him early. His teammate, Rodney Paulk, has already committed to USCarolina and another, Adam Patterson, will probably follow soon. It will be tough to get him, but his early interest is encouraging.

grad, i havent heard anything on it, but dont you think all the violations that they just realeased might have an effect on his commitment as well as his teammates? not that this will change his mind to tOSU, im just saying that they will probably commit elsewhere due to these penalties(whatever they are)?

What they didn’t count on was the stellar performance from RNE senior running back Keyzelle Thomas. The Cavaliers turned a couple of critical mistakes and the pounding of Thomas into scores on their way to a 23-7 win against Lexington on Friday night at Wildcat Hollow. “The first half, we didn’t play particularly well, and I wasn’t pleased at the half,� Richland Northeast coach Jay Frye said. “The second half, we made some adjustments and defensively played well. Then, up front, we really started to take control.� Thomas finished with 182 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. He was almost a one-man show on the Cavaliers’ first scoring possession. He carried the ball five times on a six-play drive that covered 63 yards. He slashed off the left side for the final 8 yards, tying the score at 7 with 6:13 remaining in the half. Thomas sealed the deal late in the third quarter. After having an 80-yard touchdown run negated by a penalty, Thomas plunged into the end zone to cap an 80-yard, 11-play drive. “Once he gets his 230 pounds moving forward, he’s a load to bring down,� Frye said. “There’s not going to be too many people able to bring him down with one blow. His legs are enormous, and he doesn’t try to side-step anybody. He’s looking to run them over.� RNE took the lead for good after Rodney Paulk delivered a big hit on Lexington quarterback Ed Trussell, forcing a fumble that Markeveis Barnes recovered at the Lexington 48-yard line. Six plays later, Barnes, who many consider the top-rated junior wide receiver in the state, easily beat the Wildcats’ cornerback on a corner pattern for an 18-yard scoring toss from Tye Wright. “The score right before the half was a huge key,� Frye said. “We got a turnover late and were able to take it in for a score just before the half. That was a turning point, no doubt.� The Wildcats were without Miller who was sitting out a one-game suspension for using Leaphart in a preseason scrimmage before he became eligible. Leaphart transferred from Gilbert and won’t be eligible to play until next week. Offensive coordinator Mike Burgess, who served as acting head coach, said the personnel losses did not play a factor in the outcome. “We missed the ability of Leaphart, but we knew what we had to do coming in,� Burgess said. 10/22 Barnes Names A Top Four By Phil Kornblut Junior WR Mark Barnes (6-3 190) of Richland Northeast said Thursday his current favorite four schools are USCarolina, Michigan, LSU and Notre Dame. All have offered except LSU. Barnes said he has about 15 offers at this point. He said USC remains his favorite.

12/28 Offers Rolling In For Barnes By Phil Kornblut Richland Northeast junior DB Mark Barnes (6-3 190) will be one of the most heavily recruited players in the state next season. His offer list continues to grow with recent invitations from Alabama, Louisville, Boston College, LSU, and Virginia. Some of his earlier offers include USC, Clemson, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Auburn, Maryland and Virginia Tech. Barnes plans to make several unofficial visits to schools over the spring and summer and might be in position to make a decision before his senior season.

1/13 Mark will unofficially visit Clemson this weekend. This is a huge recruiting weekend for Clemson. Having Barnes there means the full court press is already in effect.

1/13 January 13, 2006 Weis Checks In On RNE By Phil Kornblut Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis called Richland Northeast coach Jay Frye regarding two of his top juniors, DB Gary Gray (5-10 165) and WR Mark Barnes (6-3 190). "Looks like they will offer both," Frye said. "He's going to come after those two kids." Gray has offers from USC, Auburn, NC State, Maryland, Kentucky, Tennessee and Middle Tennessee State. And he is expected to get an offer from Clemson Saturday when he makes an unofficial visit for the Duke basketball game. Barnes' offers include USC, Clemson, Wake Forest, Kentucky and Auburn. He was considering making an unofficial visit to Clemson Saturday but won't be able to make the trip.
