ESPN
Matthews, Barksdale enter ESPN 150 By Craig Haubert Scouts Inc. Two new players enter the ESPN 150 as Scouts Inc. continues to evaluate Class of '07 prospects. Recent South Carolina commit Cliff Matthews (Cheraw, S.C.), a defensive end, enters at No. 135. Matthews is talented with the room to keep getting better. He can rush the passer and does a good job defending the run. His entry into the ESPN 150 now gives the Gamecocks two ESPN 150 defensive ends, along with Travian Robertson (Laurinburg, N.C./Scotland). The other entry is a big name in the world of recruiting, and he is also a big boy. Defensive tackle Joseph Barksdale out of Cass Tech in Detroit enters the 150 at No. 125. The ability to find quality tape on Barksdale was a challenge, but we found some that we felt could allow us to give a proper evaluation. What we saw was a monster of a player who can take up space and control the line of scrimmage. He did not come across as an overly-explosive player, but we can see what the fuss is about when you see him in pads and taking on blockers. We will continue to try and track down more film on Barksdale and update his evaluation if needed. |

Dependable defense
Detroit Cass Tech had lost 10 straight games to its biggest rival, Detroit King, going into Saturday's Division 1 playoff game at King. Led by lineman Joseph Barksdale and linebacker Zach Easterly , Cass (7-3) upset the current Public School League champion, 7-6. Cass' last victory over King came in 1998, 34-20. "It's a big win, all right," Cass coach Thomas Wilcher said. "It's been 10 years or so since we beat them. Defensively, we wanted to stop the trap and contain number 25 (Darrin Williams ) from going outside and keep them from cutting back. I don't worry about statistics. I just worry about winning." A ND guy I talked to about recruitng just called and passed along this info to me as well. Now the question is did ND "drop" him, or did they just figure out what many have known all along?
