A recruiting diary: David Arnold's thoughts
Editor's note: Thoughts, recollections and impressions about the recruiting process as experienced by Copley junior David Arnold and told to Akron Beacon Journal sportswriter Gary Estwick.
PHONE CALLS
I was tired after the regional track meet, so I wanted to go to sleep on the bus ride back to the school. But my phone rang, and it was a coach from Purdue. So we talked for a few minutes.
So then I got off the phone and went to sleep. We get to the school, I go get my car, I drive home, and as soon as I stuck my foot in the door, the (home) phone was ringing. It's a coach from Boston College. He was telling me that they were thinking about me, they’re really interested. They’re slow with the offers, but they have to do some more evaluating, and the coaches are going to get together and there’s a good chance they’ll be calling me with some good news.
So I’m on the phone talking to him, and the phone rings on the other line. It’s the coach from Toledo. I asked the Boston College coach could he hold on for a moment. So I click over and it’s the Toledo coach – he’s a good friend with my uncle in Warren – I asked him could he call back in 10 minutes. I told him I was on the other line.
So I click back over the talk to the Boston College coach; we finish over conversation.
Ten minutes later, the phone rings. It’s the Toledo coach. He asks me who I was talking to. I told him it was actually a coach from Boston College. So he’s like, "Ah, you’re big time! Too big for Toledo!"
He was just joking.
It was interesting, a new experience. A coach calling me, and then another coach calling at the same time.
UNOFFICIAL VISIT TO PENN STATE
We arrive at Penn State. We’re walking to the building where we’re supposed to go meet with coach Jay Paterno. And we look over and stepping out of this white Impala are Michigan coaches. I was like, Ah, mom, those are Michigan coaches right there! The Nike camp was going on, so all these coaches were there. I was not participating because I was tired from track from the day before. They come over and say hi. I tell them that I’m not participating in the camp. They were like, it’s good to see you.
So we go in, meet the Penn State coaches. We’re going on a tour with one of the other staff members. And we go down the stairs and look out a window and the Illinois coach was there that’s recruiting me, Purdue was there, Syracuse was there. They were all just in a circle, talking. It was just weird to see them all right there.
Frank said being there felt like he was cheating on his wife.
NEW POSITION IN FALL
The coaching staff at school said they’re looking into me playing quarterback next season. We would do a lot of cool things out of the shotgun formation. I’ve never played quarterback before, but I have a strong arm – I played center field in baseball, so I’m pretty accurate. My mom doesn’t want me to play quarterback; she thinks I could get hurt. But that can happen at any position, on any play. I think I’ll be all right. I’m still going to play safety, too.

From reading the last two posts, I hope things pan out between tOSU and David. Sounds like a great kid from a great family. Copley is in the Summit/Stark county hotbed, excellent football from youth football on up.

A 10.7 is very fast for a kid his size. The problem is that we are already loaded at safety, so he would probably come in as a wide reciever.

Scout - 06/05/06
David has offers from Syracuse, Illinois, and Akron. Arnold calls Michigan his dream school, and he also likes Ohio State. He will camp at OSU on June 23rd.
