Davis preparing for a 'fresh' start
Friday, August 03, 2007
BY TOM LUICCI
Star-Ledger Staff
The big man on campus officially arrived at Rutgers yesterday, except he was slightly smaller than advertised. Anthony Davis, arguably the most heralded recruit in school history, reported for football check-in at 345 pounds -- five fewer than he is listed at in the media guide -- with the goal of being 330 sometime this month.

I've seen Davis's name on several "Freshman to Watch" lists, but I've not seen a single article that said how he was doing in camp. Does anyone know if he's on track to even play this year?

Had heard he was penciled in to start at guard... Looked for him in Buffalo game... but didn't see him...

He had a dumb personal foul penalty for a late hit which could have cost his team on a great drive they were making

After that he kept his cool and played a pretty good game

Rutgers' Davis can see what the Blind Side has in store
May 15, 2008
By Dennis Dodd
CBSSports.com Senior Writer

It is what Anthony Davis has been training for his whole life -- a life that is halfway through its 19th year.

The success. The awards. The honors. The food, for a teenager who topped out at a tubby 367 pounds when he arrived at Rutgers last summer. All of them are memories as the massive sophomore offensive lineman attempts to take on the biggest challenge of his young football life -- switching to left tackle.

"First and foremost he is protecting the blind side of the quarterback," Rutgers coach Greg Schiano.

Sounds simple, technically, but couldn't be more emotional and complex when it comes to pouring a football foundation. Left offensive tackle, the second-highest-paid position in the NFL. The hardest to master, perhaps, at any level. The position made famous by author Michael Lewis in his fine book, The Blind Side.

What are you doing with your summer vacation? Eighteen-year-old Anthony Davis is continuing his left tackle makeover. Of course, that was the plan all along for perhaps the most important recruit in Rutgers history.

New Position and Outlook for Rutgers Lineman
By DAVE CALDWELL
Published: August 25, 2008

PISCATAWAY, N.J. ? As a highly recruited tackle for the local high school football team, Anthony Davis once would have considered going elsewhere to play in college. That was before Rutgers emerged as a solid program right in his backyard.

First, however, there was the matter of his size. Although bigger would seem to be better for college offensive linemen, Coach Greg Schiano said Davis was too large. He was carrying about 370 pounds on his 6-foot-6 frame ? about 55 pounds heavier than Schiano suggested he should be.

Davis, who had played at Piscataway High School, was talented enough as a freshman to crack the Scarlet Knights? lineup as a right guard. But he was put on a workout regimen, and on a diet of grilled and steamed food. He now weighs 316 pounds.

?You couldn?t change your body the way he has over the last year without working really hard at it,? said Kyle Flood, Rutgers?s offensive line coach.

Not only is Davis lighter, but he is also said to be stronger and quicker. He is no longer a right guard, either. Davis has been moved to left tackle, where he will try to prevent opponents from hitting quarterback Mike Teel from the blind side.

?He?s learning, and it is a new position for him,? Teel said. ?But he?s talented enough that a lot of times, he can make up for mistakes that he might make. Plus, he?s a guy who likes a challenge. I think he?s looking forward to the opportunity.?
