The horrible thing about these situations is that the coaches can't say a word about what is going on. Any recruit can claim offers and then make coaches look bad if they don't get their way.
That is a big problem but not always entirely true. Particularly when Conley was with OSU and talking to Kurelic the media (or at least one of them) knew what was really going on. Recruiting rags and web sites are not obligated to report an offer because a kid says so and if in doubt there is usually someone they can check with to get a nod or a wink - but not a quote.

IMO where the trouble often comes is when the staff is trying to keep kids on the back burner and therefore need to let what is really a potential offer stand in the mind of the recruit. It is when such a kid decides to publicly commit that things get sticky. If the kid is adamant about the offer the media has to play along.

Some kids (i.e. Vince Browne, Skylar Jones, Jermale Hines, Kyle Jefferson) seem to understand how the process works and are content to let the coaches make their evaluation and decision whether or not to offer later on in the process. Others (i.e. Andrew Dailey, Henry Hynoski) tend to set a date or establish a timefram for when they will make a decision and if they do not have the offer by then, then so be it. And still others (i.e. Nick Schepis, Chris Smith, Chris Givens) are perfectly happy going in a different direction. Despite the fact they had interest at one point in OSU, they are content to look elsewhere and not wait on OSU's coaches. All of the situations seem to work out fine...the ones that don't work out fine are the ones like Oh8ch describes.

24. Aaron Johnson, WR, 5-10, 150, 4.5, Baton Rouge Southern Lab. Johnson is another blue-chip prospect on a loaded Southern Lab team. He is a small receiver with explosive quickness. He played running back as a junior with more than 800 yds rushing. He projects as a wide reciever. He likes Michigan, Ohio State (camp, offer) over Auburn (offer), Georgia and USC. 2.8/18

My Choice Would be Ohio State

My Choice Would be Ohio State

<o =""></o>
Aaron Johnson from Baton Rouge, LA Southern Lab talks to us about his High School career, how he impressed the coaches at the 2005 Ohio State camp, and where he is interested in attending college among many other topics.
<o =""></o>
By Steve Patterson
<o =""></o>
What are your best attributes as a football player?
'I am a really good receiver. It is very hard to jam me because my I get off the line so quick. I can catch too. I played mostly running back last year, but I had 2 touchdowns on 3 catches. So, I am good in the open field. It’s hard for the first man to tackle me.'
<o =""></o>
Was there a specific game or period of games where it became clear just how special you are?
'I noticed it in the game against St. Amant High School (5A). We are just a 1A team. In the St. Amant game I had 11 carries for 146 yards and a touchdown.'

Will you be graduating early from Southern Lab?
'You can say that, but I have a late birthday. So, I started school a little early. I should be graduating next year when I'm 18.'
<o =""></o>
What are you looking for in a college and a football program?
'I want to go to a nice college with good academics and good people. I would rather go to a big school so I can increase my chances of going to the NFL.'
<o =""></o>
You were last year's MVP of the Ohio State camp, what parts of the camp did you excel?
'I excelled in the one-on-ones and the seven on seven drills. Also, I was in the top five in the forty. (4.51 first time ever running the forty). I had a 4.23 shuttle, too. They said that they liked my route running, my speed, and quickness. My brightest moment at camp was in the seven on seven. I was at safety and I jumped up and intercepted a pass with on hand. They said that it was just like I flew across the field and rocketed in the sky.'
<o =""></o>
What schools do you currently have offers from?
'I have received an offer from Auburn, but I am still trying to see if Ohio State has offered me. I was told that I had one from my uncle, but the people on Rivals say that I don't. So, I have to confirm that. I receive letters from Georgia, Auburn, USC, Florida State, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Stanford, UCLA, LSU, Illinois, Oklahoma State, and Michigan.'
<o =""></o>
How much contact with the coaches have you had at the different schools you are interested in?
'Lately, I haven't really been talking to the coaches. I let my father handle that. So, I can focus on my senior year.'

How would you rate the schools that have offered this far?
'Its pretty open right now. My choice would be Ohio State though.'

Are you planning on visiting all of the schools?
'I don't know for sure where I'm going now. But, I’m going to take all six visits.'
<o =""></o>
Do you look to red shirt as a freshman at your college of choice or are you looking to make an impact on the field your first year?
'I would like to play as a freshman. I am going to make a big impact when I do get on the field though. I’m shooting for a National Championship and the Heisman. But, my father told Coach Tressel (last summer at camp) that if I was to come there he wants me to red shirt because I'm going to still be young. So, I don't know yet.'
<o =""></o>
When will you be making a college choice?
'I'm planning on making a decision after the season. Before signing day for sure.'

If Aaron does not have a written offer of a scholarship from Ohio State on official letterhead, he doesn't have an offer.

I thought the limit was 5?

Make an impact as a freshman, national championship, heisman - seems pretty ambitious.

REPORTER: As great as everybody loves the tradition of the game being the last game of the year, do you foresee the possibility, with all the changes in college football right now, that eventually the Big Ten might have to go to two divisions and have a championship game?

TRESSEL: Not by Saturday. So, I don't know, I don't give it any thought.
