He wasn't turned away...he could still come for an unofficial. Why bring him in and ignore him? That could be more damaging than anything.


Most schools have a huge recruiting weekend in January where the kids are given absolute attention all weekend.

I used to be a big proponent of bringing in biggest haul the weekend of the biggest game of the year...but this staff has shown that they are maybe their most effective when they are able to spend quality time with each player, something that can only happen in December or January.

Look at last year...the big official visit weekend was the 12/2-12/4 weekend...

What don't you understand about that?

I presume that you realize that, during the Tressel regime, OSU's success with recruits who visit on game days is basically nil.

I also presume that you realize that the players will be playing on the field, not sitting in the stands, so they are not particularly concerned with the game day atmosphere, but would rather find out in-depth information about the program, the team, the coaches, the school, etc., and that off-season visits provide the recruit with the best chance to learn about such things.

I also presume that you realize that Tressel is a pretty good recruiter and has a fairly decent won-loss record at Ohio State. But, maybe you know more than he does....

I was thinking more in terms of getting him in here on an unofficial and letting him witness the atmosphere first hand because he hasn't experienced a game. Then letting him come back in January for an official. I would just love to see Martin and Wilson causing havoc in the backfield for years to come. I realize recruits learn more from their officials, but this atmosphere is something that isn't present with every team. I just want to give him another reason to choose us over Illinois.

Purely speculation, but I'm thinking it is a transportation thing from the way he says he wants to come in for the game but will not be able to make it...however, he was willing to come for an official.

Yes on tickets and the recruit can have access to the recruiting room, lockerroom, tours, etc. However, the recruit must pay their own transportation costs and if they eat, they must purchase and receipt their meal.

Simeon star Martez Wilson is scheduled to leave Friday morning for his first official college visit -- to USC. He'll attend the Notre Dame-USC game Saturday night. The 6-4, 230-pound Wilson, a five-star prospect, has both schools on his list along with Illinois, Ohio State and Michigan. Wilson said his official visit to Notre Dame is scheduled for Dec. 1.
Will the victor Saturday at the L.A. Coliseum be the winner of the Wilson sweepstakes?
"Whichever team wins the game, that's not going to change anything for me," Wilson said Monday. "Both are high-caliber programs. What else can you say?"
Wilson made an unofficial visit to Notre Dame earlier this season for the Michigan game. Although he is a standout defensive end at Simeon, Wilson expects his role to change if he selects the Irish.
"Notre Dame said it would use me at linebacker," Wilson said, "and the coaches also said they'd use me on offense in the red zone."
The Irish and Trojans are battling over a number of top recruits. Another is Everson Griffen, a 6-4, 266-pound defensive end from Arizona. Griffen is scheduled to visit USC this weekend, according to recruiting analyst Tom Lemming.
"This weekend isn't just about this year for Notre Dame, it's about recruiting for the future," Lemming said. "I remember when USC beat Notre Dame by 31 in 2002. A lot of the top juniors and seniors saw that and lost interest in the Irish. Notre Dame has a chance to reverse things this season."
Irish coach Charlie Weis, who cannot speak about specific recruits, did talk in general about recruiting against the Trojans.
"We go after a lot of the same guys, and [USC coach Pete Carroll] wins on some and we win on some," Weis said. "The only way you're ever going to get any good recruits is if you're willing to go against the best."
